Ok, according to a friend of mine there was a US maker with excellent, sub 1K Loveless style subhilts at the Blade show. Unfortunately my friend who will remain nameless failed to write down the makers name.

Anyone know or remember the maker? It was a new maker.

Thanks.

Didnt go but you might check out Gatlins work. He's doing Loveless designs. I think he won best new maker last year.

Your friend sounds like a knuckle draggin cromagnon, perhaps he would have written the guys name down if he had a crayon.

Simon Lytton had some Loveless style knives in that general price range. I don't recall if any were subhilts. They were from a Japanese maker and the craftsmanship was extraordinary. The name was not one I can recall, but Simon should not be difficult to contact.

We bought a fantastic Knife from Thad Buchanan - he is currently making Loveless style patterns. The knife that we purchased from Thad - was a Subhilt Baby Bear in beautiful Elephant Ivory. We posted a picture of this knife a few days ago in this section.

I was very impressed at Blade in noticing the very high caliper of work demonstrated by some makers following the traditional Loveless style.

Charles Vestal (at the risk of singling out one), brought a little Boot Knife which was extraordinary at what I considered a very reasonable price.

I think it was Bill Johnston from Ohio (not sure if that part is right) who had subhilts for quite a bit less than 1K.

I went with Tom's hint and ran with it on Google.

Looks like there's a Guild member W. C. "Bill" Johnson who had a subhilt (not Loveless-style) for sale at Rehoboth.

Here's an image of Mamoru Shigeno's Loveless style subhilt, for an example of his work. Not sure what he charges, as most were engraved by Simon Lytton, who was hosting him at his table at Blade.

EDIT: Incidentally, I saw Shigeno's work and it's really good. But if I were buying Loveless style, I would go with Charles Vestal, Alain Desaulniers or Ricardo Romano.

I have a Deso boot knife and like it very much. I'm no expert on Loveless knives but it certainly meets my criteria for a nicely-shaped knife. I really should post pics and a quick review some day.

Here is a Loveless-style mini wilderness by Alain Desaulniers with narwhal ivory scales. Nothing but outstanding things to say about his work, including the quality of the narwhal.
