who says you can't drink seawater?

Just used my MSR Reactor stove & pot to boil salty seawater (ok it wasn't ocean water just water with 2 cups salt mixed into it). Once it got to a rolling boil, I fashioned a crude "tent shaped lid" out of tinfoil (we all have that in our PSK's right?) so that the steam would hit the tinfoil "lid" and condense and run the end of the foil and into a cup. Took me no time to get about a liter of pure distilled water. I let it cool, and drank it. NO salt taste, tasted just like fresh water. The pot had about 2 cups of pasty salt left over. (one could save it for salting meat in a survival situation)

If one had some thin copper tubing they might punch a hole into their pot lid and use the tubing instead of foil.

Sorry, no pics, camera is still busted.

I've always liked the idea of distilling in a field situation (never tried it, but I like it). I would think that it would provide some really clean water for drinking. Maybe I'll make myself a simple little lightweight still, and give it a try.

Too bad about your camera. I just got mine working again, after a fashion: mine turned out to be only corroded contacts. It's still a POS camera, but at least it kinda work now.

I've heard of and seen this done before. It takes so extra work, but it definitely doable. You can do it with urine as well, although I think that would have a strange taste.

Nice, of course you want to be able to do it on a fire, slit modification needed, and no, the urine distilled should have no taste-just water left, well mostly water, nothing you should be able to taste at left.

Very cool, I've got to try this. But just to be clear...if you get your camera fixed, and you decide to try this with urine, you can leave the pics on the camera. :)

I'll have to try this, it sounds quite practical, but making a foil lid like that seems like the sort of thing its a good idea to practice beforehand...

Assuming you are adrift the fuel to water production ratio is massive and not practical. there are other solutions that are better.

Foil isn't needed. Make a tripod and suspend a bandana on 3 sides. Moisture builds up and can be squeezed out. Maybe I should demo this at WAR in a couple weeks. Any want to see it?

^ true, one can use a bandana, but with the foil tent like lid i was getting water in the cup quite quickly, and i did'nt have to squeeze a bandana all the time. I just left it .

distilling and condensation traps do work, but you have to stay on top of them and depending on the size/source you will probably need more than one for it to supply you completely with water. That said they are probably the best tasting form of field water source out there. I'd build myself a distillery before tabs or a transpiration bag, that's for sure.

Bandanas are good for another form of field filter, a teepee style sand filter. I have used these quite often, but from sources I knew didn't have giardia or cryptosporium because sand isn't small enough to reliably filter it out. You can also tie it around a branch for a rain catch, all the rain dripping down the treebranch will soak in the bandana and as it fills, will drip clean water into a container. I like Shemaghs alot, you can buy them for 10 bucks at a bunch of different places. They are big enough to use as a decent neck tie or face shield, bandage, pillow, etc. I get them from Grey Group Training, they sell ones with skulls on them :)
