Who sells koawool?

Hey Folks,
I'd like to build a forge. I have a bag of refractory cement, but I would like to get some kaowool to line the tube. I think I would need a piece about 25 inches wide by 30 inches long. Does anyone that sells the kaowool also sell ICT100 (or is it ITC100?)? If someone has some extra kaowool laying around, I don't have to buy it from a supplier.

Could rock wool insulation be used instead of kaowool? I read a post where someone used this to slowly cool down a heated file.

Thanks,
Rob

The export and sale of Koawool is restricted by the state of Hawaii. If it's ceramic blanket you are after, I recommend Ellis as well. And Zoeller forge.

I got mine at a local Harbison-Walker. The also had satanite and bricks for my heat treating oven...

Not knowing exactly where you are, I'm assuming Pensacola is within driving distance of you. Look in the telephone book or online for refractory suppliers. Here is a link and contact info for Mansfield's Pensacola location.

Tell them you are looking for fibre blanket refractory and what temperature it needs to be able to withstand (2600 degrees F ?). If they can't help you out ask them for a reference.

PS My guess is HI has export regulation on Koa Wood not on Kaowool!

Thank you very much for this info. The closest place I had found to get foundry supplies was in Birmingham Al. when I was thinking about making a foundry furnace a few years back. I am close to Pensacola and go through there a few times a month. I'll check out their website and/or call them very soon.

Thanks again
Rob

Resurrecting this old thread because I need some inswool and insboard for a heat treating furnace I'm building. I normally get this stuff from Darren Ellis but he did not reply to my email and now his website says they're closed for two weeks (for Blade show I presume). Unfortunately I'm too impatient to wait for them to get back.

So, where can I source these items quickly and at a reasonable price? Anyone know? Thanks in advance

Wayne Coe http://www.waynecoeartistblacksmith.com/ He has Plistix which is comparable to the ITC and Inswool Ceramic blanket

Ellis - did not reply to email and doesn't list a phone number
Zoeller - did not reply to email OR to the voicemail I left
Coe - phone number just gives a busy signal...

what is it with these guys? What do I have to do to get some damn inswool???? Sheesh....

You can order from Wayne Coe by email. Took I think 4 days from first email to refractory in hand. YMMV

Hey Wulf, if you don't get a reply from those guys soon, send me an email. Might be able to get you set up.

Thanks railrider, I appreciate your offer but I'm all set now. I ended up buying from a large supplier.

would you mind letting us know which supplier you ordered from? It would be nice to have more options

If you google "ceramic fiber blanket" you'll find a bunch of industrial suppliers. Chances are you'll have to buy a minimum of 25 or 50 square feet but you'll be able to get it for much less than what some of the specialty knifemakers supply houses charge. Not to mention the fact that you'll be dealing with an actual business that will, amazingly, answer the phone! Or even respond to an email! ;) Shipping can be a bit costly so look for a supplier close to your own location to save a few bucks on that front.

I got mine from a pizza oven supplier :D A 50 s.f. roll of 8# density fiberfrax for $75. That's $1.50 per square foot. A lot of other guys charge between $3 and $5/ square foot.

Is there a source for Insboard? I wanted to buy a relining kit for my NC Forge Whisper Daddy -- they were advertising that they sold better insboard than the NC Forge kits for less money.
