I have a great idea for a Xmas present for my dad. As a kid I remember my dad carrying around a slip joint when we were in Germany. He used it for everything, even cutting fruits. The blade has since dulled considerably, and he hasn't carried it or any other knife in over 20 years. I'd like to get it sharpened. It's a nice looking piece with wooden handles.

The problem is that I have to find it first. ;) It's somewhere in storage.

Most of the knifemakers here can handle that little chore. I know Tom Krein's work first-hand, he is excellent. richard j is another maker that advertises sharpening service here.

What are their rate? Any ballpark figures? It's just a small slipjoint. Blade is about 3 inches in length.

I couldn't even guess (I sharpen my own) and the one Tom sharpened for me was incidental to a total regrind of the blade. I have a feeling the postage both ways may cost more than the sharpening.

Where do you live?

The knife shops around here will sharpen knives for $3-$5 an inch

I am sure a local cutlery shop would suit you best

Here is another offer to sharpen your knife for free. I have a sharpening business and I'm in Indiana. PM me if interested...

That is a little rediculous.

The store at the mall I live by will do any folder for 2 bucks. Not by the inch.

I live in GA btw...and I'm still looking for the knife as we speak. Thanks for all the offers. :)

I have this thread bookmarked for when I do find it. It's in a box somewhere.

i might charge $4-5 for a 6" blade if that. at fundraisers i would only charge $3. a knife and since it was for a charity donation most guys gave me $5. for a fixed blade and $4. for a folder. i never raised my prices much in the 17 years i have been using the wheels.

That's some crazy vid btw. I'm not sure on the grind on the slipjoint, but I'd just like it sharp.

I hope it's not in the attic. I'm looking around the house atm. I have too much junk in the attic.

Another free offer as long as you pay shipping. Im in south FL. I use paper wheels just like Richard.

member chuck geyer made the sheath for it. i had put it in a cardboard sheath so he could take it home but i should have dulled it. he told me he hardly touched the blade and got cut. sometimes i have people ask if i can sharpen a knife not quite so sharp. i asked why.
