hello I ordered this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004RFMA steel rod system to sharpen my knives. Can I get some insight if this sharpening system works or not? I have the two croc rods for my shorter <4" blades but like for my BK-2 you guys think this rod sharpening system I bought on amazon will work? Thanks in advance.

Like singularity said that's not realy a "system" it's a steel.

A steel is for maintaining the edge on a knife that is already sharp. Not for sharpening a dull knife.

So you will need more than just that to properly sharpen your knives.

The ceramic rod will work but I use mine as more of a hone. if the knife had a bad edge it will take a while to get it back with ceramics. I take out dings with a variety of stones depending on the steel, then it's onto the ceramic sticks to fine tune the edge. This will do good for a first effort though, and it's cheap enough.

That one is for honing, it doesn't have ehough grit to repaire an edge that is very dull or damaged.

You will want to get something that has a coarser grit if you ever need to repair or properly resharpen an edge. Those two that you are looking at are OK only for finishing off, or touching up an edge that is already pretty sharp.

Yes, what he said.

yup, pair it up with a diamond rod and you're set. I think DMT makes a 3 sided rod, coarse, medium and fine etc for around $30.

When you said rod system I thought you were talking about something like this:
GATCO

That is what I use and I am very happy with the ease of us and the results.

Good Luck

Just FYI, if you want to pick up some knowledge about knife sharpening, hitting up youtube is a good place to start.

You can find some pretty in depth info and how-to's there. I know Murry Carter has some interesting freehand sharpening stuff.

Just stay away from the "as seen on TV" carbide scraper gizmo stuff and you should be fine. :)

Well I thought you meant something like a GATCO too, but I use a sharpmaker and love it. I'm down in San Diego for spring break and I just sharpened all her kitchen knives from a very dull edge without a bevel to a razor sharp edge on the Spyderco Sharpmaker. Look it up on youtube, it's very easy to use and fairly inexpensive, it cost me $53.25 at Grand Prairie Knives (gpknives.com).

Alright just got my steel rod sharpener and like you guys said it does clean up the blade real well. So what should I get next to make it fine and sharp?

I carry an AG Russell Ceramic Sharpener in my BOB for touch ups. I also carry a Spyderco Sharpmaker in the same BOB but it seldom gets used because I maintain my edges on the Ceramic Sharpener and/or a loaded strop. The AG Russell Ceramic Sharpener is much easier to set up and put away. I use the Sharpmaker for those occasions when I dull an edge which isn't too often while the AG Russell maintains a very sharp micro bevel quickly and very easily. A few strokes on the Ceramic Sharpener and a few passes on my KnivesPlus loaded strop ad I can top hairs.

A knife steel ( striated or smooth) re-aligns an edge ; not really taking any metal off. An abrasive rod does ( diamond, ceramic, etc.) As far as rods go , I like the Eze-lap model "M" Seen here. Puts a good working edge on a knife. I pair that with a Fallkniven DC-4 and can then sharpen most anything.
