I don't see many threads on this fire starter like I thought I would. I need to get a fire steel soon and I want to get a nice one. I thought I'd would get a LMF fire steel, but I've been intrested in ESEE knives for a few weeks now.

I looked it up on KSF.com and it's at a good price, the only thing is the rod itself. The description said it was a misch metal rod. Misch metal it seems needs to be striked with a really sharp striker. KSF suggested using you knife edge but I've done that before and it gets a good spark but dulls your edge really bad. Those of you who have used this, what do you use? Do you think If I were to rub the coating off of the spine of a ESEE it would produce sparks?

Also, the descrip said it does not produce sparks but molten balls of misch metal. What does that mean? When I scrape the rob will it produce little fire balls or what? I couldn't find any youtube videos of it. Can any one shine some light on this?

I can try. I've got 4 kits. Love em. I really suggest using a knife edge. If you dont like the idea of dragging your good blades across it, carry a little SAK recruit and use the short blade. I use my Izula as a striker, and really, the edge doesn't take that much damage.

As for the sparks: They throw pretty good, long burning 'peels' off the rod

I was/am going to get one...where I wanted to order it from has it listed as out of stock for now.

I've got a goinggear striker to go with it - but actually I've never used it, the ESEE fire kit is emergency gear for me. I've got some other mischmetal rods (goinggear) I use regularly.

Check out the striker from Going Gear. They really work pretty well. I'd defeinitely recommend being familiar with how the RAT/ESEE fire kit works and try it several times in case you ever need it.

I do not have the ESEE fire kit. I use a striker made from a hack saw or sawzall blade . very cheep and kind of fun to make. Play with different sizes and shapes find what works best.

I always have a SAK farmer on me (Even keep one in my ESEE Pack Kit) You'll find that the Awl makes for the best striker and doesn't compromise your knife edge. The firekit takes practice; it's my favorite first choice.

I think I had seen it mentioned somewhere that these are meant for a survival situation, where dulling a small part of your blade would be a welcome trade for fire. Not that you cant use these any time you want, thats just the tradeoff in a survival situation.

I use a hacksaw blade also. I got one of the fat ones and used a belt grinder to turn the teeth into a straight (sharp) blade. I wrapped a few layers of duct tape where your fingers go for a handle, and there was already a hole on the end to thread it onto the lanyard that also holds the firestarter itself.

Just because descriptions say "use your knife edge" doesn't mean you absolutely have to...improvise an edge.

I use a SAK farme for tinder extracting in my kit. Hardly use the AWL, if it works well with the the ESEE fire kit then I'll probably get one. I just didn't want to use my knife edge. Thanks for the help.

I've been using the striker that www.goinggear.com sells and it's worked great for the RAT Fire Kit. All of the misch metal rods need a sharp edge to strike it in order for it to work good.

I use the mich metal ones from going gear with their strikers. I tried the hack saw blade, SAK awls, and other cheap blades and the carbide going gear strikers are the best I've used. The mich metal from the Esee striker and the going gear ones seem to be from the same type of mich metal and perform similarly.
