If the only way to get a satin blade ratmandu is to get a ratmandeux then I will need someone to grind off the top guard of the handle to resemble the original RMD. Do you guys have any recs as to someone who does great work around here who will make the top of the handle feel just like the original RMD?
Im not going to preorder the knife until I find someone to do this for me, because the top guard just doesn't sit well with me for my purposes.

Thanks

Dude. It's just metal. Grow a pair and grab your angle grinder. Grind till you're almost happy then sand till you're happy. Easy peasy.

Ban (Tang) does awesome work, he pokes around on the Busse forum I think.

But since it's not on the heat treat side, it would be tough to mess up.... good luck.

I wouldn't be so sure it isn't on the heat treat side. So far I have seen no info on the RMDx, but the RMD is through hardened. So if you do grind on it yourself dip it in water regularly.

And make sure to tape and make the edge safe!!! A convex with SR 101 would lay ya open to the bone with very little problem...and wouldn't even feel sorry.

Ummm, I live in an apartment and my tools are 1000 miles from here or else I would do it myself.

Ill try and contact Tang, thanks for the info!

I am not so sure that the top guard is a bad thing. If I were you I would try using it for a while before you make the decision.

Remember this knife has a longer blade than the RMD, so even if you grind the top guard off you will not be getting a satin RMD. You will have a modified RMDx. If I wanted a satin RMD I would strip mine. Pretty easy with some stripper and always fun to talk about.

I personally like the top guard and don't think there will be issues with it. My Regulator works great with the top guard. You are able to "lock in" the blade. I believe Jaxx posted picks of how to place your fingers with the Team Gemini gaurd.

Why would you go through all that trouble just to get a satin RMD? Just get a RMD, and then send it to NORCALBLACKTAIL, or any other number of forum members who will do a beautiful satin job for you.

Satin RMD - I can do that.

It's more comfortable than I expected it to be.

...For those wondering about the top part of the guard (spine side), and whether or not it gets in the way, here's 2 pix showing the TG in my hand choked up with my forefinger on the choil and my thumb on the spine. Both pix were taken without moving the hand holding the knife, only the wrist, forearm & elbow were rotated.

As you can see, the base of the thumb rests comfortably on the guard with the thumb on the spine as with any other knife while in this position...

I also recommend trying it out with the guard first before committing to removing it. :)

If I had an RMDx I would have the top guard removed for aesthetics. It just doesn't look right to me. Ban does awesome work as do several others. I would suggest looking around the Busse forums if you are serious about having some modifications done and talk to the guys that do the type of work you are interested in.

Oops, didnt know my thread had been bumped. Email being sent to NORCALBLACKTAIL. Thanks for the advice guys, this is a MUCH better idea!

Nate's work is absolutely top notch. You will not be disappointed. :D And whatever you do, post pics when you get it back.

Thanks.

I could do it, but I am in the why camp, I love the top guard.

E-mail me when you get it & we can work out something especially if you get a sheath form me ;)

Excellent advice.

Bushflyr's advice, on the other hand, is what we refer to as "bad advice."
