The BK2 is a great knife, a fantastic knife, and a wonderful knife. It is a definite contender in the "one knife to do it all" category, but at the end of the day, like any knife fitting that description, it does everything well, nothing great (except baton). Can you use it for everything? Most definitely, but that doesn't mean you would want to. I think a lot of people start off with it because it does have a reassuring heft to it that means you can screw up during your learning curve and not hurt it, but eventually you are going to go a different direction once the amount of knowledge and skill under your belt increases. I went smaller, and if need be will pair it with a larger knife (BK9) to do the stuff it can't. I think a lot of people go that direction when they've got more time behind them and experience to know what they are going to need one for. I still love mine, and it lives in the car now for those times that I might be forced to use one knife and one knife only, but as far as what goes on the belt or in my pack, the BK16 is the one for me.
