I was just wondering what maker or company was the first to produce folders with Pocket Clips ?
What did the first ones look like , and has their design changed much ?

Wow, I would have never guessed that. Just figured it would be more difficult to track down or at least an older company. Thanks Jill

Spyderco has contributed quite a lot to the knife industry. Pocket clips, collaborations, "tactical folders", all black knives, fully serrated edges in folders, round hole for opening, etc.

Agree 100%.

While I am more excited about the current offering from ZT, the breadth of the Spyderco offering is amazing. Steels, designers, lock styles, applications, fixed or folding, Spyderco has it all and maintains a high level of quality across the board. I cannot think of another brand that has consistently and continues to bring so much to the knife market.

Sorry for the thread drift, but I could not resist.

+1, well said.

The first knife with a clip I ever heard of was a Spyderco. Clips on knives are what changed me from often carrying a knife to always carrying a knife. My first knife with a clip was a Spyderco Worker I bought around 1990 or so. I replaced it pretty quickly with a Police model. I sold the worker but I still have the Police.

A few years back in, I believe, KnifeWorld, the oldest knife found with a clip was a slim knife with a clip to go into a shirt pocket. It predated Spyderco by several decades.

Yes, Spyderco was the first modern knife making company to use the pocket clip.

However there is more to the story than that.

Recently, the Ka-Bar knives rep that runs their Google+ page was going through their archives and came across a patent document from the 1930s showing a traditional-style folding knife of theirs that had a pocket clip.

I went back to look for the page and can't find it. So I wasn't able to post the link to it.
