Love the knife, bit Don't love the thick flat grind.

Will anyone tackle this... and how much am I looking at???

THANKS!!!

Archie,

I suspect you feel this is a custom knife.

As such, your best bet is to send it back to Strider and have them re-grind the blade.

Although, once the blade is hardened it is much more difficult to do.

So you will probably need to custom order the knife you want.

You might want to take this question over to the Shop Talk forum. You will likely get more answers there.

I suspect that Les is right in that putting a hollow grind on a heat treated blade could be a problem. Grinding will cause a lot of heat and great care would have to be taken in doing this or the hardness of the blade may be affected. There is a chance that the blade would have to be heat treated again after it was ground. If Strider will do a custom blade for you, you may find that to be the better way to go.

I just heard that some makers prefer to grind after heat treat, and since I REALLY like the blade, I thought I'd see what the possibilities are... I tried a post in the suggested forum... THANKS!

Grinding after heat treat is no problem. You just don't get it close to the tempering heat when grinding.

But I would call the Strider guys and ask them to do it, first.

Dude!

Ruin a Strider? Sell it and buy something that fits your specifications. A Strider, from what I understand, is a Combat utility knife. It is designed to pry doors from hinges, cut open ammo cans, and other crap you wouldent expect anything buy a sharpened pry bar to do.

I say look around, and maybe you can make a trade or sell it and get a custom from someone who will make it to your specs.

...just a suggestion.

You see, this is why you ask this question where the makers hang out. Mike's answer about grinding after heat treat not being a problem was actually quite informative to me. A couple of makers I have talked to about this consider it to be a bit of a pain in the butt.

I've ground a few HT'd blades in my day. I think the smaller ones are a little easier, but you also have to pay close attention to how hot its getting. The real reason HT'd blades sux for grinding is that its slow going. Grind, dip, wipe, cuss, etc.

You don't want to do it anyway
after a blade has been flat ground
it's not left enouph steel for
a good looking hollow grind.:(

Like already mentioned, grinding after HT is not a problem. Just don't get the blade too hot. I know a lot of knifemakers who grind after HT; Kit Carson, I believe, does all his that way. It all depends on how many grinding belts you want to use.

Yup, I heard Kit Carson say that B4. I did not think anyone would do it... unless they have screwed with Strider Knives Before... like The Toxic Toys dude on the USN. Sounds like there is nobody willing to do it, so I may sell it on the Forums.

Thing is... I Flitzed it smooth, and rewrapped the handle differently. I also heated up and reformed the Kydex sheath accordingly. I like it better, but am not sure what to ask. I guess I'll start it at a few bones less than new and post pics.

THanks folks!

The main thing with grinding blades that are heat treated is using FRESH belts heat doesnt build up nearly as much I wouldnt hollow grind it though if you want it reground go for a thiner flat ground edge strider leaves them thick so they wont chip ever but that not really what most people want/need
