Who would I hire for this task?

Would I get a machinist to do this task? To take a current knife handle, which is currently aluminum or a "white" metal and basically copy it using a better metal or stainless steel (not sure of right word) "slab".

Basically, I have this knife that I wouldn't mind improving upon, taking its current softer metal handle, and making an exact match (to spec) in a better metal.

TIA

There are knife makers that do that sort of thing. Matt Cucchiara comes to mind, but I am not sure if he does it to any and all knives. I know he has some Emerson and CRK knives shown on his website .

Be real sure it is something you want to do though because it can easily cost mor than the knife did.

Thanks guys!
Hmm, was expecting it would cost more than the knife, no doubt. But if it is going to cost a heck of alot... :(

Kinda thinking that a knife maker would charge more than say someone who does machining work typically for auto parts etc... Maybe...

It really depends. I would think that a knifemaker works with that kind of thing all the time, and knows how it should go together and work. A general machinist may well be able to duplicate the part, but there is no real guarantee that it will form a god working knife.

All I can really tell you is that asking questions is free, so start talking to makers and machinsts. See what kind of price you are looking at and make a decision form that.

You could try it yourself you know. Machining things isn't all that hard to do if you have the right tools. I say give it a whirl or ask a machinist if you can perhaps pay them a little money and have them allow you to utilize some things in their shop. It is well worth the learning experience, trust me.
