Who would manufacture a knife idea?

This may be wrong forum, but since I have no idea WHICH manufacturer to turn to, here's my question.

I have an idea for a knife design. No one has ever done this concept. Who would design and build a knife? Need someone who can make composite handles as well as either build or contract out the blade. I would expect to pay for the work. And from what I ...think...the demand would be, be able to do volume manufacturing if it did catch on as I think it would.

And of course, protect the concept and participate in the sales.

Any information appreciated.

Might try a custom maker first, and then if I understand right, if demand looks to be that big you could setup something with Tops or a similar outfit.

What I have in mind is so simple that I think a custom maker would not have the equipment. It would require someone who can make molds for the handles as the most complicated part of it. Do any custom makers do high volume molding? Or making the molds?

I would submit the idea to Mike Turber. I believe that he is still looking for knives for his new company: Boss Knives. There have been some design contests already, and I'm sure he won't mind seeing another idea.

He frequents these forums looking for input, so go ahead and email him @

Just so you all know, he lists his email in the sig line of all his posts, so it's not like it's private, or anything.

I'm not a knife maker by any means, but as a manufacturing engineer I can tell you having a custom mold made for a prototype may be cost prohibitive. Of course if the design did catch on, it would pay for itself in the long run, but what if it doesn't?

I think your best bet would be to have a custom maker build you a prototype using some alternate manufacturing method just to prove the concept. Then you would have something to show potential partners who may be interested in your design.

Even if there were no takers, you would still have a one-of-a-kind knife custom made for you to your specifications! How cool is that?!!:D

Good luck with your design. Give us some details when you can.

My suggestion would be to see a Registered Pattent Attorney to see if you can get your idea protected. If you can you can submit your idea to any knife manufacturer you wanted to and see who is interested in producing your design and paying you a royalty. Of course I don't think this is the way most collaborations happen, but you're an unknown.

I have sent the email. I am also trying CRKT. I really think that several thousand units a year would be very reasonable estimate of sales.
I have copyrighted before, but a patent really requires a tangible object.
We shall see what happens.

Thanks to all for suggestions.

No it doesn't, it requires a written application and a technical drawing. You don't need a prototype for a patent.
