Just got my 710D2 and have been enjoying it so far. I'm worried about having to sharpen it in the future though. Are there any tips for sharpening with the Spyderco sharpmaker? I read somewhere you should not use the flat sides or something. Unfortunately it has some bladeplay when open so I returned it to the pharmacy. They said my replacement will come in about 3 days so I hope it was just a fluke.

It was just a fluke. For all the great rep the axis knives have, I never got real excited about them. However, I've got one of the original 710s and it's the only axis I've kept. Great pattern, in whatever steel. Just use the corners of the Sharpmaker rods, you'll do fine.

The problem with the flats on a recurve is that they will hit the inside of the curve and scratch the flats of the blade if your're not VERY careful. So just stay with the corners.

New Graham is indeed awesome to deal with.

As far as sharpening, I might add that it is easy to round off the tip of a blade when using the Sharpmaker corners. I sharpen my blades just shy of the tip when using the Sharpmaker rod corners. Then I switch to the flats. I have had no problems using the flats, but apparently experiences vary.

While I do have a Sharpmaker, I don't have any D2 blades, so I have never sharpened D2 on a Sharpmaker. There is enough Vanadium in that alloy to form Vanadium Carbide, which is harder than the Aluminum Oxide of which the Sharpmaker rods are made. Since I have no personal experience with this alloy, I can only say that the possibility exists, not that it will happen. A lot of folks on the Maintenance and Tinkering forum use diamond sharpeners.
