Just a comparison of the Busse Assault Shaker and the Rat Shaker. The AS I just got from a forumite and the RSs were purchased at Blade 2003 East.

Shaker Profile

And a look at the cross sections.

One end

Other end

I think the AS has more defined lines and a smoother finish but they feel just about the same.

Right now I'm using the 1/4" AS but as soon as I get a sheath for the 3/16" I may switch out.

As for specs all I can say is that they are about 5-5/8" total length and the blade is about 2-5/16".

As far as I know the Rat Shakers were only available in limited numbers at the East and West Blade shows.

another example of a rat shaker vs. an assault shaker.

while i wish the assault shaker was 1/4", ive personally never held anything as sharp as my 3/16"as. i dont think its a zero edge, but if the zero edge is any sharper, i dont want it. id be afraid to use it. as is, ive cut my palm without noticing it while wrapping the knife, i just layed the blade on my hand, and apparently there was enough friction for it to cut in. i sure as hell didnt notice the knife moving...

A while back I heard that the AS had an asymetric(sp?) edge, so far I have yet to see one that was. Mine is symetrical. Does anyone have one thats asemetric(sp?)?? Seems that the full convex would suit this one best, an asemetric(sp?:p) edge would be lost on a knife so small eh?:D

Sheesh, that sounds a bit cryptic huh?:p Just a little confused right now, heh heh:confused:

Mine seems to be asymmetric since it is not an equal grind on each side but not quite a chisel grind. One side looks like a normal grind height but the other side is a very thin grind.

mhawk,
Thanks, great shots!

Dwayne,
My AS has the asymmetric grind! Works well, even on this little thing!:D

when i got mine, jerry said that there were assault shakers on the cutting floor, or i could get a 3/16" double cut bead blast finish assault shaker for a slight extra fee :D

it would be worth calling and seein if any of those are still available, and if they're 1/4 or 3/16 :)

My AS is ground asymmetrical also, but I believe I would prefer one like what SethMurdoc has. 3/16" with a more conventional grind would make a much more practical neck knife for me.

Wow, there seems to be a lot of those asymmetrical grinds out there! And thanks for the spelling lesson!:o I took a very close look at mine and I cant see a difference in the grinds on both sides. Anyone know if this is an oddball or did the shop change the grinds at one time?

Now you've got me wanting a double cut AS!! Migh have to make another trip to the blaster! Or maybe I need to just get one myself:D

I've got a 1/4 double cut AS that has the black coating on the spine and inside the holes only.
As far as 3/16 vs. 1/4 goes, I prefer the 1/4. The edge is plenty sharp, and you have the added strength for light prying.
