for Brian and Dave.

I thought I'd save myself some $$$ and make my own RUCK sheath. Almost 3 1/2 hours later it's pretty nice, but I'm not feeling so hot about my hourly rate after expenses :o and not nearly as nice as a professional model ;) but at least it's ready to go chop reeds in babylon.
Go with the pros on this one, folks!!!

That sheath is Excellent!
I bet starting on a small knife is easier than all that sharp Ruck steel!

It looks good!

But I know exactly what you mean after tinkering with some leatherwork -- the professionals just seem to "know what they are doing..." ;)

Looks like you're ready to ship out... God speed

3 1/2 hours! I would try it!  Then bow in respect to the masters...

Do you have any photos during the process? Would love to see it if you have any.

One more thing, I love the sheath placement on the pack. Wicked cool over the head draw!!!! ( Add sound effects here ) :D

Great looking sheath! Looks like you nailed it on the first try. Looks great on the pack.

And you will always remember making it.

Haggis, I guess I should have thought to take progress pics. I was in a hurry to get it done as I leave today, half hour or so (won't be overseas for another few months though, just schools for now).
Thanks for all the compliments, I guess it looks better in pixels!

Nice Sheath! The Zulu is awesome!! I have the same one and I love it.

Good luck in the sandbox! Thanks!!

I plan on carryng my ruck in the side slot pouches on the Zulu, once I get a sheath. (the AK is great but it looks like a big fat coms antenae sticking out of a pack)

That is really nice for a first attempt. :D

Hourly rate  I am afraid to figure out my hourly rate. I am pretty sure I would be very disappointed.

I have never made a kydex sheath but have made several leather ones. Yes the pro's do a better job in less time but this is a hobby, its much cheaper to make your own, I find myself lost in the project and completely forget whatever it is that has been stressing me out, there is a huge sense of accomplishment when you get finished, and it gets faster, better, and easier as you go. That one looks great to me!

After reading an article about making your own leather holsters in Shotgun News, I decided to order some stuff and give it a twirl. Heck, I could do those piece-it-together change-purses and keyholders from the kits. How much harder could this be.

Every time I look at Dwayne's work, I thank the good Lord that there are men like him that understand how to do this stuff. B/c I don't. I stink at it. Everything I make is TOO SMALL. No matter how big I THINK I'm making it.

And not line is straight if it should be or curved if it should be. Nor are my cuts perpendicular to the leather. Or my hand-stitching close to uniform.

I do a few projects here and there. But for stuff I really want to look nice, I call an expert.

JW,

THAT is AWESOME! Especially for a first attempt....you didn't start with an easy project either!

Ya know, if you want to do about 200 or so more of those......;)

Be safe, be well!

Looks good JW. I have done a lot of sheaths, but even I am hesitant to try one for the Ruck or the AK. But now, I think you have shamed my into it. Hmmm. I wonder how I am going to heat that whole slab o' plastic evenly. :D My oven isn't that big.
