Whoops....to much ordering...

I had always bought my knives right off the internet, or from a dealer. About a year ago I decided to start ordering some knives directly from the makers. Unfortunately I didn't plan it out as well as one could have hoped. I started thinking about it and had to sit down and figure out when all my knives were "due" and how much they would cost. For six knives (custom Sebbie, two Beggs, Mosier, Graves, and one Randall from several years back) I've rung up $3600. And they're not nearly as spread out as I would have hoped. I'll be able to handle it, but the wife will be pissed, and no more knives for me until at least 2012. Oh well. They'll be some very nice knives though. :D

Poor planning. Didn't think they'd all be ready at once.....

thanks for this thread.

if various family members get stuck into me for dropping the $$$ on some Fallknivens that just arrived, i'll point 'em at this thread!

No knives till 2012

You'll order at least 5 more before then MARK MY WORDS.

Well. Yes. You're right. But I can at least hope right? :) And they're not going to be nearly that expensive. Or you'll see all my knives up for sale after my wife kills me. :)

Wife and I have a rule for now. No new projects. All pre-existing projects (if its in Reese's garage) with any custom maker are exempt. If I want a new knife, I have to sell or trade.

The problem with custom orders is that you never really know when they are going to be completed. So, theoretically, they could all come due at the same time.:D

Sometimes this is an issue. I usually space out my projects far enough apart to where there is little or no overlap. Only time problems occur is life throwing a curveball at you via things breaking.

"but the wife will be pissed........."

Whoa, buddy....hope you built a comfy dog house with plenty of room. If I pulled something like that to the tune of $3500....my "you know what's" would be hanging from a light pole.
Hope it works out for you but, I'd start complimenting her on an hourly basis just in case!!:):):)

My wife knows the cost of all my knife purchases. She's an accountant. She and her family approve of my addiction.

Good grief, you're lucky. My wife, too, is an accountant, and she likes knives OK and all, but thinks they all oughta cost about $25. I bought a new $40 knife last week after telling her not to worry, it's a cheapie, and she responded by telling me she didn't consider $40 cheap.

And I've tried the old "honey, my $200 knife is cheap compared to the insane prices the guys on the knife forums are spending on customs" routine. The response I get is, "That proves nothing. They're insane addicts, too, just like you. If you have an addiction, and you only hang out with other addicts, you'll never kick the addiction.''

Well, dadgum, I don't want to kick this addiction, er, I mean hobby! I like it, and it ain't like it's meth or something. OTOH, she has given some weight to arguments that it's cheaper and a successful diversion from my gun addiction, and that I've never taken up golf, which she detests, and which would also be more expensive.

I think I need to remind her of both those things, and make another knife purchase! :D Homer Simpson voice: must . . . order . . . knife . . .

It's really simple. You have a disease and it's not curable, ;) SO you have to find a way to accomodate the urge, but slow it down some for your own sanity. Sounds like a terrific collection as it is!!

My wife and I have a deal worked out...I'm a fancy knife and old jeans guy, simple dress code...she's in corporate for a living and buys the nice shoes and clothes, different dress code altogether.

So she buys the clothes and I buy the knives...I can't buy every one I fancy and she returns a lot of stuff to the store, so we're often even in our spending.

Oh, yes, the SMF is most definitely on my "must buy" list for the future.

For now, I'll have to console myself w/a small sip from my $50 dollar bottles of Gentleman Jack whiskey and Bombay Sapphire gin. But wait, that could start another addiction! A more dangerous one! That's what I'll tell the wife--let me buy more knives or I could become an alcoholic when I "drown my sorrows" over knife withdrawal. :D

Other then knives I'm actually very cheap, so my wife won't be to pissed. She did give me a yearly budget though, which is why I said it'll be until 2012 that I'll be able to buy more. :) These orders take out what remains of my 2010 money, all of my 2011 money, and a decent chunk of my 2012 money as well.
She aware of the money, so it's not like I'm hiding something. The problem isn't the ordering of knives really, its the poor planning of when they'll all be ready. :)
