Who's broken a Becker, or nearly broken or tried to break one?

The reputation and warranty give me some confidence that I can put my Becker's through some hard use and maybe even some abuse. I haven't broken one or ever thought I might but I'd like to hear about it if you did. There have been a few mentions here and there - someone broke a 7 digging up roots, someone else broke a 7 throwing it at a tree and didn't Moose break a 16 at the gathering? And if you haven't broken one, have you ever done something with your Becker where you thought "I shouldn't be doing this" or you thought the knife might not make it through the job? Who had to pry open a door? Anyone hammer their blade into a tree or log? Did someone else have a knife throwing contest? What's the worst you've done to your Becker blade, whether it made it through or not?

I broke a bk7 prying fatlighter. Called kabar had it sent off within hours of breaking it. Like a goof I didn't include any information at all with the knife. I recieved the new one about 5 business days after mailing the broken one back.

I've taken the more "delicate" of the large beckers, the BK-5, and done all sorts of things with it I probably ought not of done.

Like prying open the shells of a few good sized snapping turtles, prying open rib cages and prying apart joints on carcasses. I've used it as a machete and to hack up kindling.

1095 is tougher than a lot o' folks think it is.

If you can imagine it, I've done it to a knife.

BKT's? I've broken a few, but sometimes, that's my job. From Necker's to BK9's, the only one that hasn't succumb to something has been the 2. And even throwing it will cause to break, we found out. Like we didn't already know.

Anyway, BKT's are made to be beat to hell and back, confidence is not in the warranty, its in the hand.

I want to know how moose broke the 16.

Prying a 2" diameter piece of wood apart. I point first batonned the BK16 through each side, then was trying to separate it, by prying and twisting the blade.

Simple enough. Don't pry with a knife. Or at least one that size. Its tough, and I sure wasn't expecting it to break, but break it did.

I do want to offer this, what I was doing, you shouldn't be doing with a belt knife of that size. Something like a BK10, BK2, or BK9 would have been a better choice.

All that said, we put a BK16 and BK17 about an inch into a wooden block, and hauled on it. They bent, but didn't break. Mine bent to, then I flipped it over and done the same thing.

Twice.

Before it broke.

I have seen a few threads with some Beckers that broke. I have seen all brands of knives break...even the ones that aren't supposed to. I even broke a DogFather once..or at least had a half quarter sized blow out on the edge. It happens. I have broken 4 Estwing hammers, to many flat bars to count, chisels....you name it. If you push and push..something has to give, and your arm has the ability to heal itself, the knife can't.
Beckers are 1095. Thats been the go to steel in this Country for a long time for a reason, IMO.
Tough stuff.

EDIT. Knives break when thrown and pried upon for the same reasons IMO. The energy across the weakest point in the knife..the thickness, is to much. Thats why batoning a knife is a gentle thing actually. If you go at it right, a knife thats 1/16" thick can split a log 2/3's the length of the blade. It just takes some finesse and sense. Some folks have it, some don't...thats why Kabar has a warranty department...
And...,sometimes stuff just happens.

It's certainly impressive what they can take, especially considering the cost, and the way Ka-bar stands behind the warranty. I haven't broken any of mine, but I generally treat my knives like knives. I did buy a 2 after reading through Brab's attempts to break his blade.

I winced a lot during that long and entertaining thread...but man, that BK2 is one tough SOB.

Brab's thread was part of the reason I put this one up, just to see what other kinds of abuse people have put these knives through. It really is these sort of experiences that give me confidence in choosing a Becker and the warranty is just insurance, you get if for peace of mind but hope you don't have to ever use it, but if you do, it's there.

There is no warranty for most of my Beckers because Camillus (the REAL Camillus anyway) no longer exists.

I reckon that means I'll have to buy KaBar versions as spares.

I am in the same boat as you. I have been getting some KaBar Beckers to use and keep the NIB REAL Camillus Beckers new.

I'm pretty sure that if you managed to break a Camillus Becker, Ethan would make sure it was replaced for you.

I could be full of it... but he seems like that kind of guy.

Naw, the warranty on those went with the shop. Ethan has taken care of a couple of folks that I know of, but that is not standard practice, and there are mitigating circumstances to each.

Don't count on it. If warranty is that important, sell off the Camillus, there are buyers a plenty, then buy you a Kabar one.

It will fall under Kabar's warranty.

LOL

NONE of my Camillus Beckers are NIB:D

Now, had a I known The End Timez™ were coming for Camillus, I would have bought some and left them NIB.

I got a bunch just before my second combat tour when Camillus went under. The only one I carried in Afghanistan was the Camillus Becker BK77 Becker Extreme in S30V steel. I put it away in my black box in country when I read they went under as it was still in excellent shape. I wish I had gotten more Camillus Becker's also. I was able to get some of the government versions that were not common. When I came back I put them away and saved them for later use that never came:D I started buying Ontario/RAT and then when KaBar started making Bercker's I got back into the Becker designs for daily use.;)

Don't forget also there WAS an occlusion where the break was. That in itself significantly weakened the steel at that point making it more vulnerable to breaking.

i broke about a half inch off the tip on a cammy bk7a long time a go while prying up fatwood. no problem, i just ground it out , made a new point and went from there.
