It's friggin' cold out here, -10 with the windchill this morning, we're burnin' wood in the fire place, workin' on the second cord,(still cheaper than oil).

I've had coal and wood stoves before and I prefer coal, in my last house,(an old 175 year old farm house down South Jersey) my primary source of heat was this monster enameled parlour wood/coal stove, this sucker had more dampers and venturies than I could count.

Startin' up a dead stove wasn't much fun especially if the stoves had been dead for a couple of days, the plaster walls on the house would take days to warm back up.

I remember once we got that baby burnin' we'd keep her burnin' for weeks, it would burn for 8-10 hours on a good load of coal banked over night.

It was nice on Saturday mornin' to get that extra 2 hours sleep before ya had ta get up shake her down and load her back up again.

Wood. Nothing beats a good oak or almond fire for warmth. My cat agrees. She beds down next to the stove towards the end of October and doesn't move till April. :D

Are buffalo chips considered "pellets"? Gotta keep the sod hut warm somehow...:p

Seriously, I have a wood-burning fireplace. I rarely use it much anymore though. It came with the house and is not a very efficient design. The house that I grew up in had a Franklin Stove in it, which I liked better.

Only good thing to come out of Hurricane Isibel was an endless supply of free firewood.

I burn it in a very efficient, very pretty Lopi fireplace insert that has been going strong for over 20 years now.

Moving to Gadgets & Gear. :)

It even gets cold in Joe-Ja !

We burn for enjoyment rather than necessity. . .10 - 12 times during the cold season. Always keep a nice sized stack of oak. . . .ready and waitin'. :D

This past week has it been in the low 20's at night. This past Monday the thermostat went on the fritz. . . . Had to stoke up the fireplace to take the chill off !

There's nothing like a nice coal fire, let me tell you. IMHO they're more warming and just plain more comforting than wood fires. I was never near one before I went to Ireland, that's all they burn over there. When I build my next house I'm getting a coal stove/fireplace.

Dow, didn't you experience peat/turf in Ireland? You can't beat the smell of burning peat!

Andrew.

Oh absolutely, you gotta love the smell of a peat fire. There's something special about the constant, steady heat of a coal fire that did it for me though. I'm a coal fire convert!

Wood stove, and it always stays roaring hot. It can be 0 degrees out there and I will be walking around in shorts and a t shirt in the house.
