Who's got an Ed Fowler blade?

After many years of reading on him in blade, and handling one of his small hunters at a show (man that grip feels good in the hand!) I finally looked through Knife Talk. I think I NEED one of his large Camp Knives. I used to think his knives were sorta ugly, but definitely comfortable. The look has grown on me, and the performance is supposed to be outstanding. Suddenly I want one, maybe I'm maturing? Nahhhhhhhh!! Any opinions would help, and probably make the jones a little worse!

I do.

I have a 5" Fowler Proghorn and it is, without a doubt the best knife I own (I own a lot, too).

Ed's knives are high performance. No hype--just an excellent knife. He personally selects the 52100 bearing quality steel. Forged personally by Ed, triple quenched and triple tempered. Every aspect of a Fowler is made by hand from the blade with 3 beautiful temper lines to the brass guard, engraving, and 3-piece domestica buck horn handle, aged for a minimum of 4 years and the heavy duty (and I mean heavy duty) waxed harness sheath.

I use mine. It is not a collector's piece and it is a joy to use. Very comfortable and very easy to sharpen.

Ed is not only a master bladesmith and writer he is a wonderful guy. His better half (Angie) is just a terrific lady. I have learned more about knives from Ed than any book I have ever read and I am proud to call the Fowlers friends.

Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.

If you're really serious about owning a Fowler, you might want to get his video on how he makes them. It will blow you away with the amount of work that goes into his knives. I have watched the video about a dozen timies and it still amazes me every timie I watch it.

Having both read the book and watched the video within the past week, I can tell you I share your want in a big way! I know it helped to have read the material in the book about forging/hardening/tempering before I watched the video.

It is absolutely amazing to watch Ed demonstrate the sharpness of the edge, then purposely run the edge straight on the side of his stone, so it won't really cut paper, then give it a couple licks on the stone and suddenly it is super sharp again.

When you know that the edge on all his knives has been tested strongly for chipping, and, if need be, will bend 90 degrees without breaking, then I believe Ed's definition of "high performance" is vastly different from that of most of the folks in knifedom.

Now, if I can just stop buying knives for a couple years, maybe I can afford one! If you've got the bread, I'd get on the list.

Greg, I was hoping you'd say you hated it!

Thanks for the good word. Bugs, I'm sure his waiting list is a mile long, jump on and start saving! (Thats what I'm gonna do) I will order his video on Monday, and a knife at the same time.

GET A FOWLER KNIFE!

It does not matter which one, just get one. I have used several knives for hunting/fishing and I love my Fowler. I have a 5" hunter and it works great for everything I come across when I am hunting or fishing. I am trying to find a smaller one (3" blade) to see if I can use it as a daily carry knife.

I don't own a Fowler knife but it will be my next purchase. The Prong horn was the first knife I fell in love with when I first discovered this whole custom knife thing, and nothing has replaced it yet. If form follows function then there's no more beautiful knife either. I first met Ed & Angie in '98 and there just aren't any nicer people to know. I agree with Greg get a copy of Ed's video and see what goes into one of his knives and you'll be convinced there's not a better knife you can buy at any price.

PS, Angie sorry I won't see you at Blade Show, Ed I hope to see you on Thursday.

A Fowler bowie with a 7" blade was one of my first custom knives. It's still one of my favorites. I use it whenever I go hiking.
I recently moved and haven't unpacked yet. Last Saturday, I had a bunch of people over for Sabbath dinner. I couldn't find my "challah knife" (challah is a soft braided bread). Everyone at the table was amazed when I whipped out my Fowler bowie and it went through the challah like butter (a difficult task for a non-serrated knife).
I really have missed seeing Ed and Angie at the NY show these past couple of years. You won't go wrong with any of his blades.

th, as everyone has said, buy a Fowler. You will not be dissapointed! If you want a knife that has a part of the maker in it, is tested to be a high performance blade, will still be performing and looking good for your great grandchildren, get it.
Phil, I know you wanted to make the knife look good but please, next time use Angie's pic with the advertisement,LOL.
Yitz, I miss them at NY too, maybe if we bug them enough, they'll come back this Novemeber.

Phil, you're a whiz with Photoshop, very cool! All youz guyz who got Fowlers are lucky! With a 6 year wait now, I'll be waiting a while, but think it'll be worth it. Unless I find one of his big camp knives at a show that is.

I own a beauty of a Pronghorn that has proven itself to be an extremely Heavy Duty knife. I live on a Farm and it has helped me tackle some tough chores.

If you acquire a knife created by Ed you will own more than just a cutting tool, you own a piece of history that Ed worked long and hard to create.

I have decided that I would be proud to have owned just one Fowler knife....but another Pronghorn would also suit me just fine!

I was fortunate (luckier-than-hell) enough to get a Pronghorn that Ed originally made for himself, to replace his long-time user. After deciding it was too special to use, I was "forced" to buy Short Camp No. 1. The blade is less than an inch longer than a Pronghorn and a little deeper. The price difference is about a hundred bucks.

The one downside of the bowies and larger camp models is cost. You can often get a Pronghorn or Short Camp for a grand or less, but many of the larger blades are several thousand bucks. As mentioned many times above, they are worth it----but you have to have a lot of discretionary coin to drop that much on even the very finest of knives.

That said, get whatever Fowler meets your needs & budget and you will never regret it.

Hi James,
Ed does not have a web site. I would recommend picking up his book, Knife Talk, The Art And Science of Knifemaking. In the book it has numerous examples of Ed's knives and philosphy. Great book to read, too---lots of fun stories. He goes into great detail on how he makes his knives, too. Under $15 from Amazon.com.

You can get the book from Ed, too.

Greg is right, get the book, but also get the video you can get ordering information from this thread.

http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum41/HTML/000365.html

Ed, sends a long a brochure that's as informative as most books plus you'll get a clear idea of the styles and sizes of knives that he offers. The video will also make it clear why there aren't more Ed Fowler knives available, and that any way you can get your hands on a Fowler knife just do it.

If you started a thread entitled, Who Wishes They Had a Fowler Knife?" a lot more of us would probably respond. I suffer from a bad case of what psychiatrists call "Pronghorn Envy."

I was pleasantly surprised to recieve an email last night from Angie Fowler. They seem like great people, and the fact that Ed uses his knives everyday of his life, I know he makes something that I can depend on. The price is high, but with the long wait, i'll have plenty of time to save!

I appreciate everyone's input, it will only make the wait more difficult!

Yes,tknife, Ed and Angie do read the forums sometimes, so be careful,LOL.
Ok, for those who keep saying that Ed's knives are expensive, consider this:
If you take the amount of time Ed takes making a knife, consider all the time he spends testing his knives, and all else that is involved, you would find out that it doesn't come out to a very high hourly wage. With no disrespect to any other maker, Ed doesn't just grind a piece of steel stock and glue on slabs. Did you know he has to age his sheephorn more than 5 years before it can be used? So the term expensive is kind of deceptive.
BTW, I haven't been able to afford one yet either, but I will.

Can't leave myself out of this! I have one or two
wink.gif
Also have the video which I watch several times a week, AND the book which has been autographed by Ed.

PhilL, I too was smitten by Ed's knives way back when. There was just something about the way his knives looked that appealed to me. Still does! I was lucky enough to be in a position to buy a 5" Pronghorn from Ed at the Oregon Show. It's almost a dead ringer for the one in your PhotoPoint pic with Ed.

RJ, small Fowlers make great edc's. I have an old Willow Bow that was my edc for about a year or so. It has a 3 1/4" blade, multiple quench 5160, mirror finish. It works great! It cuts much like a larger blade, holds an edge very well, and isn't even 52100. I was thinking about having Ed etch it for me just to see how it looks.

BTW, I see that there was a small Pronghorn with a 2 3/4" 52100 blade being offered in the A.G. Russell Cutting Edge catalog that came yesterday. Proportionally a very nicely scaled down Pronghorn. They wanted $795 for it.

Take care, fellow Fowler lovers.

Kwaiken56- I also saw that knife in the catalog. It is already spoken for, unfortunately not by me. I am #2 on the list in case the buyer backs out. (I have my fingers crossed
