Wondering if anybody is in the San Diego area? I'd love to be able to find a spot where we could meet up, bushwack, swap stories, hunt down some fatwood, sit around a fire, and practice some woods skills.

Only problem is, most of the outdoor parks in the area forbid the gathering of firewood, and have too many hippie types to bring out the blades.

Anybody know a spot? I went out to Palomar this weekend with my girls and most of the park was closed due to water on the trails.... I couldn't believe it, a park closed because of water... It was beautiful though, and getting the girls into hiking has been a blast so far. I want to teach them how to fend for themselves though. Just don't know a place where I can.

I don't live in San Diego anymore, originally from Escondido. Did a lot of camping, fishing on Palomar. Caught lots of lovely trout out of Doane's Pond. Is it still there??

Just went up the Observatory Trail to visit the Hale Telescope a few weeks ago. Nice and easy trail.

I was stationed in San Diego in the USN from '03 - '07 ... I really enjoyed hiking and camping along the PCT in the laguna mountain area of the cleveland national forest - you should definately check it & Anzo borega (sp?) state park all are within a 45-60 min drive. Also, check out Joshua tree NP ... but it is more crowded than the Cleveland NF.

Have fun!

Yeah, I know the area fairly well as I grew up in east county. Joshua tree is great if you like rock climbing or the desert, not my cup o tea though. I like trees and green, higher elevation and the shade of a pine Forrest.
I'm really trying to find a place I can go to practice woods skills without being harassed by hippies. I want to be able to use what's around me to make a little fire to brew some coffee and maybe cook my lunch, ya know, without the fear of being fined or arrested for "disturbing nature" as I haven't found a place that doesn't prohibit gathering firewood

I second the laguna mountain area of the cleveland national forest. Beautiful area with tons of hiking, forrest, etc... Many places where you could go off trail and not be bothered.

I'm up in North County SD.

Went up to Julian on the 1st and ran across the William Heise County Park. About a 4 mile hike.

Check out Anza Borrego. I've only done a few day hikes in the area but would like to get out there for some quality time.

And a third for the Cleveland National Forest. I really dig the Dripping Springs Trail/Area...although it's a ball-buster.

So far some great spots mentioned, but as far as I know, all the wooded areas listed don't allow gathering of wood, or ground fires.

But, those of us in SD should head out to Laguna or Palomar one of these days

We had some pretty dramatic fires rip through the county in 03 and 07, so ground fires in the parks are probably a thing of the past.

Born and raised here. you will not find anywhere where they will allow you to gather wood and have a ground fire due to the threat of fires most of the year. you will only find the occasional fire pit.

sorry bro that's the reality's of living in cali.. hence one of the many reasons I moved from riverside 5 yrs ago, born native in los angeles area its ashamed to see whats become of my beloved home towns..

I say, listen to 'light my fire' by the doors and go NUTS :p
