Who's painted their KMG?

As many of you know, I just got my KMG and am wondering about painting it before setting it up and wiring it. I know the one I saw in the flesh before purchasing mine was still naked and that one other maker treated his with a rust preventative. I am wondering if anyone has painted theirs and if it's worth the trouble.

What do you guys think, paint it, or just keep it well oiled?

I wished I had painted mine...or at least sprayed on some rust prohibitor. It rusted before I was able to use it...:(

But now it has an "aged" look to it....:D

Just make sure to cover any oiled/lubed parts.

I went to the local harware store and purchased a couple of cans of Krylon, maroon metallic flake paint.....took the parts I didn't want painted off, and gave it two coats of the stuff. It came out looking great. After the last three years of hard use it still looks pretty good....that is once you knock off all the steel dust! :)

I HIGHLY recommend Hammerite paint!!!

There is also a Rustoleum product that's pretty much identical. You can buy both at Home Depot.

I never liked the puke green color of my Burr King, so I stipped it down and painted it Silver Hammerite, as well as my Disc sander. My machininst cabinet is painted with that blue in your link.

It's easy to use and gives a very good, durable coating that's also very nice looking.

Go for it! :D

That's a lot of metal to rust through. Just set it up and use it -- the metal dust will protect the finish. :D

I cleaned mine with wax and grease remover, sprayed a good coat of epoxy primer, then applied a forest green metallic (like ya see on Chrysler minivans) and then pinstriped with gold stripes.
She's a racin' machine!! bruce

I agree with Nick on the Hammerite paint. I hadn't discovered it yet when I painted my grinder.....but it really is the best looking and toughest spray paint out there.

Nick: I agree, that certainly is a "puke :barf:" green color on the Burr King machines!

Mine is painted.............iron oxide! :barf:

I'm seriously thinking of bead blasting the whole thing to get rid of the rust and then using the hammerite paint Nick mentioned. The KMG is a GREAT grinder but it's sure quick to rust.

I decided it's going to be dark blue Hammerite.

The good news is that if you want to paint yours, the HAmmerite instructions say to just rinse off the oils with TSP or similar and paint away! No blastin or priming required. With 3-5 coats you get a 4 mil thick coating impervious to rust embedded with little hardened glass flakes in a polymer matrix. Seems worth the trouble to me to keep it in good shape considering how much it cost me and how long I'll own it. What's one more day.
