Who's your favorite kami?

Dunno. I like em' all.

The best fitting handle I have is a Durba.
The straightest lines I have are by Bura.
The nicest shape I have is one by !.
My favorite user is by Kesar.
The thickest spine I have is by Sher.

It depends. I figure if your're gonna use one a lot it doesn't matter much who makes it, as long as it fits. The rest is just visual preference.

Lal Bahadur

His khuks have near perfect fit and finish, and the balance on them are excellent. Blades are straight as if they came from a machine, and grips are beautifully carved. Weight is light too...at one point he said that he was the only kami in Birghorkha who knew how to make a GOOD thin blade. Boast? Maybe not, if you consider his skill level.

I'm with the spirit of Bruise's post. (Really, hovering around somewhere...) There are too many favorites and revered features to decide upon one man. Each Maker's personality comes across in the blades. I like that.

Now, if there was a rotten guy, one real nasty Kami, but made great Khuks technically, I wonder what impression, if any, those blades would give?

(just in case anyone is confused, Lal Bahadur is Bura. Bura is his nickname, more properly it would be Burha, means 'old man')

I am really like my old Durba blades, but then, like Bruise said, there are so many good ones, not the least of which is Bura. I had no idea I would be dealing with this many khukuris or this many great kamis when I started buying from Uncle Bill.

Sher for his beefy blades and nice handles, and Sanu for the special runs and wonderful lines and deep fullering on his pieces. Sanu left follow his fathers occupation, so no more blades with the + makers mark fer a while.

Ferrous, Bill onced opined Sanu as the logical succesor to Bura. This was before Sanu faded from the industry and Kumar and Sher redoubled their efforts.

I have a 25" AK by Sanu, very beautifull, that I initially thought done by the 'whizz kid'

I've only had three HI Khuks so far, all by different Kamis, and all were definitely excellent, but as said, the different personalities showed through. Not sure which my favorite woulda been.

Three in question were RR, Sher and KM(LM?) Can't remember initials on last one, whichever it's supposed to be, my khuk actually has the other set there, that's why it was a blemish.

I like Bura and Kumar best, but I haven't met an HI khukuri I didn't like. Bura's thin edges on my UBE, Movie model, BDC, Reti, and AK Bowie are amazing. Kumar's lines and balance on my big GS, Dui Chirra, M43, Katana, and WW2 are perfect.
The few khukuris I have by Sher, Sanu, and others are fine pieces of work as well, but Kumar and Bura's work speaks to me more clearly, shall we say.

Please tell me who your favorite kami is and why?

Kumar, far and away.

His Khukuri seem a bit sleeker, and that appeals to me aesthetically, but most of all, he shapes the handles in a way that seem to fit me better than the others I've tried. Also, Kumar makes the ring on the handle a bit less pronounced and a lot less sharp than other Kamis do, and my delicate hands appreciate that (grin).

Bura, Kumar, and Sher I look for, but really it doesn't matter that much to me, I think they are all good. The first thing I look for is the type and size of khuk. Only after that, if there are two of the same type available, would I pick a kami. Out of my collection, the one khukuri that stands out the most, in a pattern-room "now THAT'S a khukuri" sense, is made by Kesar, a flawless 18" WWII. My favorite khuk is by Sher, the chiruwa YCS-i.

one real nasty Kami

munk,

I assume that you are using the word "nasty" in it's proper way...meaning "outstanding, artful, generous and kind" meaning....yes?

Not that I'm biased, of course! ;)

Nasty; LOL!

...but the sweet nothings your girlfriend or wife whispers to you aside, I was rooted to the King's English.

I still like my idea of one rotten Kami making blades; Felony Kami.

LOL...

You're right...it'd be interesting to see what the charma would be...:p

Sanu. He made blades that led me into fantasies.

Since he left, Bura has become my old reliable, trusted kami.

( If anyone is too new here to know you should never trust a khukuri til you've "proofed" it, sometimes one gets thru that has a hardened tang. A half-hour session of proofing such as building up to slapping the side of the blade against a phone pole as hard as you can several times ( both sides ) is strongly suggested. Better the tang should break then than in the woods or with friends/family around a campfire far from an ER. )

My point is that if I couldn't proof the thing, I'd take a Bura.

Interesting, Munk. I did not know that! I have a YCS, Falcatta and AK Bowie by him, and gave a villager he made away to a friend. I wish him well with his new profession, and hope he does as well as he did as a kami.
