I have carrying knives for 3 years now.
I started carrying with a self defense approach. My interest in knives derivated from my martial arts background.
So I bought big fixed blades, bowies and such, and truly and really tryed to carry them all day.
As I am a lawyer in Buenos Aires city, those knives were pretty much dead weight for me. I felt kinda awesome for carrying them, but the awesomeness and barbarosity (like kung fu panda would say) quickly spent away.
Then I went into folders, of course, big folders. Same process.
After that, I tried SAKs and Leathermans and I would go around with a big folder, and a multitool.
Now, I carry a small fixed pretty much traditional knife, stag handle and 1095 blade in pocket, with a simple friction leather sheat, 3 inches long blade, maybe a tad less, and a juice.
I keep the knife really sharp.
And now, just now, I fin myself truly using the knife. To open packages, blisters, to cut food, to open envelopes. And I have a leatherman juice, and I have truly used it to fix a loose screw or bolt on a bike, to open beer bottles, etc.
Before, I was carrying just because I love knives. Today I still love knives, even more than before, but I have found that sweet spot where I really use what I carry, on a dayly basis, for real. It has become really a tool and a help for me carrying an edc knife.
I still carry now and then a cs spartan or a spyderco szabo, just because I can, for the heck of it.
I figute that edcing a knife must be a complete different experience for everyone, meaning the why, the where, the what, etc. Is there anyone that carryes knives around like I was just because you love knives, with no real use for it?
Is there anyone carrying with an idea of self defense wich (thankfully) proves to never happen?
Do you NEED to carry, or you have learned, like I, to do stuff with your knife and found it more convenient, easy, fun?
Did you had an evolution in what you carry?
is there something you kmow you don't need to carry, but you take with you just for pleasure, not work?
