Why a MC-2G starter compass?

I’ve been educating the daughters of a friend on basic survival skills. To the extent that I can, when they live on the Atlantic and I on the Pacific. To the extent that I can get them interested. Will they, nill they, on birthdays and Christmas I give them Guyot bottles, Vic Farmers, and hanks of paracord.

I recently purchased a Suunto MC-2G for each of them. Someone wondered why I spent so much when equipping raw beginners. I did so because I wanted them to have the good stuff, while it’s still available.

From reviews of the Brunton 15TDCL, the Chinese version isn’t quite the compass the Swedish one used to be. Certainly Silva was never the same since Johnson & Johnson hijacked the brand. The only major compass maker that is still manufacturing in Scandinavia is Suunto.

What got me moving was discovering that Suunto stopped making the button compasses that K&M match cases use. :thumbdn: That’s unfortunate in itself. I like those compasses. But I took it for a straw in the wind.

I’d intended to get Suunto Global compasses for the girls eventually. But if Suunto is reexamining its line, they may reexamine other things. What if they moved production to China? Would I be gnashing my teeth because I’d missed the chance to buy the old Finnish version? :grumpy: I decided I wouldn’t. I got two MC-2Gs now, while Suunto is still at the top of their form.

I’m thinking of buying one myself as a backup.

I've heard people say that if you buy the best, you only cry once. That is to say, you don't have to keep paying every time you replace the item.
I keep telling myself that to assuage my guilt over my Kifaru and Busse addiction :)

Truth. These kids aren’t hard on their gear. Not unless you think collecting dust is abuse. The challenge is getting them to spend dirt time learning the basics.

In a recent conversation I said, “I was thinking you didn’t quite get the concept of Every Day Carry. Then I realized that was nonsense. How often do you walk out your front door and realize you’ve forgotten to put your clothes on?”

She said, “If I do that I’ll get arrested. If I don’t have a pocket knife, nothing happens.”

Part of the problem is girl pants. They are still made with uselessly small pockets. By report there is scarcely room for a Farmer. There’s no room for a Ritter PSP.
