Why am I doing this...?

For yucks I'd like to start a thread on the whacky things knifemakers and aspiring knifemakers do that might be considered a little odd (or a lot odd} by "others"!

For example I could say "Why am I standing in this dumpster looking through wood scraps?" This is a practice I've got serious doubts about myself!

-or- "Why am I building a workbench that will be 8' long with a 2 1/2" top that will weigh the better part of 300 lbs. or more when finished???
I still haven't figured out this one myself, I seem to be afflicted by "overkillitis".

I'd really like to hear what everybody else is doing or did that we'd all find amusing! It might make me feel better while preparing to make knives from scratch.

i made a 200lbs pedistal for my grinder so that i wouldn't get noise vibration. it worked too.
does anyone know how to overdue lighting for almost no money, becuase my shop is dark.

Man, you're asking the wrong guys...
I'll often stand in front of a big lapidary grinder for eight or more hours, grinding hard rocks, cussing my hands for not being able to do more. (I wouldn't ask that of anyone else, you know)

I imagine the dumpster diving is to search for that "just right" piece of leftover oak, or maybe you might just stumble over a rare and elusive piece of "satin fir"
I been there, bud. You're not alone.

As for the bench, Seems just about right...

Well your workbench is probably going to be considered a lightweight compared to mine. we were remodeling the barn, had an old barndoor that was just to good to throw away, and needed a workbench. The door itself probably weighs 300lbs. Then add the legs made out of 2.5" diameter steel pipe and the overbuilt shelf on the bottom holding 500 lbs of lumber, its not getting moved anytime soon.
Hey magnum, if you can get to a lowes(or probably any of the big home improvement warhouse type stores) you can get lights super cheap. They've got 500 watt halogen flood lights for about $12.00. All they need is a standard box to mount to and their eay to put up. Depending on the size of your shop, one in each corner might be enough. Or you could mount them so they point at your grinder and workbench and stuff. Just position them so they aren't pointing directly in your face, you'll have more light in your shop than they do in the ER.

Fix it right the first time, use Baling Wire !

Matt, darn it I was going to tell Magnum to paper the inside of his shop with aluminum foil!

thanks matt, i'm gonna go buy some. i was looking to buy like 5,000,000 floresent lights, them things just aren't bright enough.
mike, i have some board type indulation on my ceiling, that has a shinny face, i point a light at it to highlight the room.

Magnum, yeah I had that in my old shop, I worked in a lumber yard at the time, the stuff was palated and shrink wrapped, with damaged sheets on the side for protection. I got to haul them off for a coupla soda's. Oh yeah, best answer I have to " Why do do that?" is , "Because I can!"

Teach them everything they need to know, let them prove it themselves!

Why am I doing this? To see if my signature comes up!!!

Industrial dumpsters near building sites are a great source of light fittings. Just next to my work there's building being gutted and re-fitted. I've been watching them carry out old 2 and 4 tube fluorescent luminaires for about a week. Unfortunately, the night I broaught the stationwagon around for some pillaging was the night they emptied the damn thing.

If you do install fluoros though, make sure you leave some kind of guard over the tubes - one tiny knock and you've got shards everywhere...

Cheers,
Tim

Does anyone blow their nose into white tissue after a grinding session to see what color the s..t is? Even though I wear a repirator, I still check to make sure the mask is doing it's job, and it always does.

"Are you ready for the defendant, Judge?"
"Yup. Bring the guilty bastard in."

Why do I never have time to clean my shop, but I always have time to spend an hour looking for that tool I have to have?
