Why are black oxide finishes selected on a multi-tool...

...other than to make it black? Is the finish subject to wear, thus making the tool "appear" more worn than with plain stainless steel?

Hi Mksql,

Rob's right. Our military contracts require "non-reflective" tools...thus the black. Also, they look really cool!

How do these finishes wear in comparison to plain stainless?

Is the texture/feel of the metal different (when I hear oxide, I think rough) ?

I ask because no local dealers carry these finishes - I must order from the net.

Thanks!

The finish of Black Oxide can wear, scuff, and/or fade. Overall, unless it goes through "World War III," it should look really good. The worse I've seen one is about 25% faded/worn; mostly only 5% faded/worn on average for a well-used tool.

Of course, a standard stainless steel tool does not have a finish that will wear, scuff, and/or fade.

The feel of the Black Oxide does add a bit of textured feel (almost like a matte paint feel...for lack of a better description).

Let me know if you have any other question/comments.
