Why are BM using GIN-1 in many new knives?

Is it down to price? I have a Knife in GIN 1 and it works well for me, but I thought BM used ATS-34 as the standard steel (or CM154)

With M2 for the decent folders! Hey! I like M2!!!

What next? 6M in folders?

YesI know Sandvick 12c7 was used in the BM 42!

I believe BM used the Gin-1 for a variety of reasons. First off, they have used it before and had decent success with it, the old panthers, monarchs and etc. were Gin-1 and are still sought after today by some. They also used it to drop prices on some models, draws more people to the name if the price is a bit lower. They also used it because it has better corrosion resistance in the water than the 154CM they are using as a standard.

If someone at Benchmade can confirm this let me know but a supplier in China claims to be doing some work for Benchmade. Maybe the G-1 is actually coming from there? I will see if I can get more details.

Whoa! Before rumours start to spread like wildfire, everyone should go read Allen Elishewitz's reply in the thread "BANNED FROM BENCHMADE!" by Mike Turber.

IMO GIN-1 is a good inexpensive steel. My Spyderco Police uses it and this is a very good knife. Using GIN-1 is a way to make your knives less expensive without sacrificing to much in way of quality.

Heh, it shouldn't amaze me how quickly people on the internet will respond to even the most unsupported and uncreditable rumor, but it still does! Mike even says who his source is, and still! Hey, there's always a chance that Mike's rumor is true, but right now, I'd put it on par with a Loch Ness monster sighting (and please folks, that's just a joke, don't go booking flights to Scotland!

BTW, I asked about this on the Benchmade forum. In my experience on reason a maker goes to a Japanese steel is because that's what's available to their Asian manufacturers (with a few exceptions, like ATS-34, which is widely available here). I have no agenda, being a big benchmade fan, and pointed the above out, to which BMST responded that they're still doing the manufacturing of the blades here. Just one more data point, interesting to see how far Mike gets with his queries.
