Why are butterfly knives illegal

It depends on the state.

They have bad publicity (much like switchblades) and have been tied to violent street gangs and back alley deathmatches in the public eye.

I would say that their perception as being more deadly/dangerous than other knives comes from their use in movies. I think if you looked at the stats you would find that most people are killed (US) with screwdrivers and kitchen knives when stabbing someone is the chosen method.

because there are people in this world who's sole job is to create laws. those people make a poo pile of money and want to keep the job of making up laws. the problem is all the good laws have already been made (don't murder, rob, rape, etc). so, in order to keep this gig going, they have to really stretch it and make people believe that new laws are necessary, which (in turn) makes THEM necessary. hope this clears it up :)

Its illegal for the same reason people want to ban "assault rifles". Simply because of their perception. A butterfly knife won't kill anyone any easier than a sharp steak knife.

I'm in ny and the state determend that they ar not considered a gravity knife and some officers won't do any thing about them mostly tho they scare people so they are illegal but there have been a few cases that have been thrown out

Bad publicity as previously mentioned.

Back in the 1950s it was switchblade knives. In the 1980s it was sinister Asian weapons like butterfly knives, nunchucks and throwing stars.
