Why are knifemakers such darn nice guys?

In recent communication with Jerry Hossom and Newt Livesay, both have been quite considerate in answering my questions and providing insight. Many times I have e-mailed people in other areas of work, asking similarly product related questions. Usually THEY just give a form-mail reply, or have an underling do it, or some other way of saying "you are not worth my time to communicate with." But knifemakers actually give a damn!

I think that there must be some kind of chemical given off by steel forges that creates this type of oddly personable behavior. I kow that the community is pretty tight, and that everyone really has one thing in mind: making and acquiring good knives. I just thought I would ask if there are any other explanations for this uncommon amount of friendliness.

I could be wrong about this of course, but my impression of most knifemakers is that they are doing What They Love. This is something exceedingly rare in modern society. Ask almost anyone if their occupation is something they chose because it appealed to their heart. Not many people will answer in the affirmative.

Not all knifemakers manage to make a lot of money making knives, but they all do what they do because they enjoy it. Many artists seem to have this happy, helpful, avuncular disposition. It really is remarkable to go to a knife show and meet so many happy people. I find it truly inspirational.

SR,

I have noticed the same thing. These guys are terrific people to work with as a dealer and great individuals one on one. In my many hobbies and my full time job as a LEO I come into contact with many disparate groups of people and find that Custom Knifemakers are super people. That does not answer your question of course but that may require some additional research,

The main thing is They ARE!

That is something I hope I never take for granted,

I've noticed the same thing, from the first Knife Show I went to that KnifeNuts in general and knife makers in particular to be the nicest people I've ever met.

I beleive what Para says is true, they love what they do, and want to share their art with others. It may also have something to do with the fact that most of them work for and by themselves.

There are too many nice makers. I am going to be the angry maker. Order a knife from me and I will throw in a free insult and a punch in the nose for those who visit the shop.

dogman, you deliver the knife, the punch and the insult okay? I'm going to be the unpleasant customer. I'll only pay surface shipping (COD) for the knife and the maker, probably on a Liberian registered bulk carrier via Malaysia and Archangel.

See you in six months or so!

Oh, and if I don't like the look of the knife I'll refuse delivery and mark the parcel 'Return to Sender'.
