Why are knives always showcased with blades open?

Another post in this forum brought to mind something I've always been a liitle peeved about. Every knife in ads or on the internet (excluding the custom makers in BF) always show knives semi open, but we never see photos of the knives with the blades closed or from the top with the blades closed.

I love seeing the blades, but I'd also like to know what the knife looks like closed.

It's not that hard to understand really. The heart of a knife is in its blade, so it's no surprise that most pictures of knives show them in the open position. While I also would like more images of knives closed, it's not really a big deal.

I agree, you can tell a lot about a knife by looking at the top and bottom: how well the blades fit together, are they crinked or milled, is the knife original or made up of replacement parts. It's pretty standard to post such pics over at the Levine sub-forum.

I don't mind if they show the knife closed as long as it is IN ADDITION to showing it open. I NEED to see the blade shape. Seriously, I gotta see it. I would never buy a knife that did not show me the blade shape.

That's simply not true.

How many people would by a fixed blade knife if it was only shown while inside the sheath?

I like to see images opened, closed, top and bottom. At a minimum open and closed. If stag or ivory I want to see both sides.

If what you want to see isn't posted I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for more. I know you don't get this option with most production knife on line dealers but the custom dealers are usually more then happy to accommodate, as are most knife sellers here on Bladeforums.

I've never really thought about it before. When listing something for sale, I just try to get good pics of front and back with blades open to keep the number of pictures to a minimum.
I can only remember a couple times when folks asked for additional pics. When someone does ask, its no problem at all to take more

When I look at a commercial site, or a catalog, I want to know how the knife looks closed also. How do the tangs fit. Are the blades centered or offset. Things like that.

It's not so much individuals selling knives-everyone will put up additional pictures. It's the big vendors and manufacturers. I wish they would post open and closed photos and put them in their catalogs.

I would definitely appreciate more manufacturers and sellers offering views of their knives in a closed position.

Even more, though, they ought to be going right on to short video clips of their products, and/or interactive views like what you see here.

Knife companies could contract with geeks in India who would do "high tech" stuff like this for hardly any money at all.
