So I decided to purchase my first knife a while back which was a Byrd Robin. Shortly after I just "needed" more so in the next month or two I picked up a cheapo Leatherman c301, a Jaguar Balisong, a SOG Twitch II, and finally this past week I picked up a RAT Izula.(which is amazing btw)

My question is: WHY ARE KNIVES SO ADDICTING???

If you think collecting knives is bad, wait until you get into sharpening.

You won't have hair on your left arm and you will be constantly picking tiny pieces of paper up.

I would describe it more of a fascination than addiction- a fascination with one of the world's oldest tools, a fascination with "sharp", and a fascination with quality and design. Have also become much more of a steel snob now, but recognize that good ol' 1095 remains pretty good stuff. I've had a knife in my pocket for as long as I can remember, just have a lot more to choose from now :)

Part of it also is the pursuit of perfection, I'm always buying new knives because I'm looking for the perfect knife, I'm always sharpening the knives i have because I'm looking for the perfect edge.

I look at this way. I'm bound to get addicted to something, and this won't wreck my marriage, my health, or the bank. Well, maybe the bank.

I think that it's at least partially genetic. I'm no doctor, but I know some people are more prone to be smokers or alcoholics or chocoholics. Maybe some people are just genetically knifeaholics.

Or maybe I'm just stupid.

For some of us we are looking the "perfect knife". We may never find it but

its LOT of fun looking and looking and looking and........

I find collecting and enjoying my knives rather addicting for a number of reasons:

1. There are so many options to choose from
2. Barring a huge budget for your hobby, you can NEVER have everything you want. This also makes it kind of fun because having everything you want in life is boring.
3. The quest for the knife that suits you best

I think people get addicted to knives because there are such a variety and they are connected to humans past and present and hopefully future

I think in life you are either a survivor or a sheep. Survivors like guns, knives and such. They always know where the exit is, always have a full charge on their cell phone, never let their gas tank get below half, and always have tool(s) on them to help them get thru the day. There is no such thing as " over prepared" if you are a survivor, thus the need to keep acquiring tools.

Sheep wait for the government to show up and tell them to breathe.

Knives are addicting? How can you say such blasphemy? Knives are easily acquired, ;)that is the PC way of saying it.:D Please watch your language.:p

Just wait until you find that production offerings just don't "do it" for you anymore.

I mean really,a knife built with your choices of steels, grinds, scales, blade length, sheaths, etc.... :) Our great BF Makers' forums will make you feel like a kid in a candy store.

Todd, it is for that reason that I rarely go the Maker's forums. Sometimes I wonder about putting the whole forum on "ignore". ha ha

so true. that is what happened to me. hmmm i wonder how sharp this thing is still. crap went through whole notebook

Knives allow us to manipulate our environment, as do flashlights, multitools and guns. Which is why many of us (including me) cross-pollinate those areas as well.

And if you think sharpening is bad, wait until you get into making them!;)

And I thought I was the only one.:o What a great support group here.:p

I had just cleaned up my work bench, and I found a knife under the rubble, flipped on the paper wheels, and gave it a few passes. I found some junk mail and started slicing. I looked down and thought, I am definitely brain dead. I just cleaned up, and made another mess all in the same session. :grumpy:

Knives are coated in MSG, keeps ya coming back like crack ;)
