Why are manufacturer prices so much higher than the secondary market?

Question in topic. One of the things I've always just accepted and not questioned. Google has produced shockingly little info on this subject.

Furthermore, why don't all manufacturers control the price of their knives like some do?

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the silly questions.

Popularity. Supply and demand.

Many threads already around on the MAP enforcement. Mainly benchmade and ZT.

Personally sometimes I think they market the products to the impulse buyers who have the "got to have it" feeling and who may not do some research first or looking around or to those who want the latest and greatest or most modern or newest steel. The question they could ask is if it meets their needs, not all their wants. This is true for a lot of things in life. Nothing wrong in paying for quality, but there are some great bargains on great knives on the secondary market.

AS far as MAP pricing is concerned...if you got in BEFORE it took effect, you got some great prices on the ZT's...
My 0770/M390 was a great buy; couldn't afford it at today's price.
