Why are multi-mount clips not standard fare?

With the addition of a few holes the knife offers so much more versatililty in carry preferences. I am particularly fond of the newer Spydercos that offer this versatility (Endura, Delica, Stretch, etc). Just seems as if should be standard fare for folding pocket knives.

The topic has been brought up before and it is a good point.

I'm thinking cost primarily and a bit of styling/use consideration second.

Some people dislike the unfilled holes. Some knives just don't lend themselves to certain positions of the clip (it gets in the way, causes safety issues, etc.).

As to cost, every feature added increases manufacturing expense. Are the end line users willing to pay for the added utility?

Another thread has it pointed out that cheap POS knives easily outsell even the moderately low priced knives (like the Spydercos you mention). Tis' life.

I collect knives, but I also carry them. I cannot begin to tell you how many tactical folders I really liked but didn't buy, because the carry-clip was (for me) mounted on the wrong end!

I prefer tip-down carry. I'm not going to make fun of those who prefer tip-up. It's about personal preference. But it just gets so damn frustrating when I see a knife I really want, then I find out that the clip is for tip-up carry only! Why so frustrating? It happens too damn often!

I mean really, how much more expensive is it for a company to just drill an extra set of holes? It's probably less expensive than losing a customer to a rival company. Here's a perfect example......

Before the Axis-lock appeared, I loved buying Benchmade knives! Loved the fact that their folders were tip-down carry. Axis-lock hits the scene, and most of the models in Benchmade's line don't survive. (I think Benchmade's Stryker is the lone survivor of the Axis-lock invasion). Practically over-night, Benchmade goes from tip-down to tip-up. Still, I had hope that Benchmade would offer the option of tip-down carry on some Axis-lock models. They did! ....... And then promptly discontinued those models. Wow! What a great way of saying "Screw You," to all of us loyal customers who prefer tip-down carry; and proudly supported Benchmade back when the Axis-lock was nothing more than a concept on paper. Bitter? A bit; I admit it..... but you'd be too if you were in my shoes.

Two thumbs way up for Spyderco (  ), for realizing that more people will buy Spyderco knives if individual customers have a choice how to carry their knives. No need to go to a competitor, when you can just reverse the clip! ....... Maybe someday, Benchmade will learn that lesson.

The only setup that'd keep me from buying a knife is if it was setup to be left hand tip down only. Otherwise, right hand tip up or down, left hand tip up carry, I can do with all of those. A delica setup for left hand tip up I can still clip to my right pocket and it's actually more natural feeling for me to use than the standard clip position.

I don't mind the tip-up or tip-down only option. What I really dislike is folders that have ambidextrous locks, but only have clip mounts on the right side. I'm right handed, and have my perfect EDC(Yojimbo), but there have been many times where I want a good knife to put on my left side, and I end up not getting it because it's drilled for right only. As Monocrom says, it keeps me firmly in the Spyderco camp, as the next "left" knife I want is the Waved Delica.

I doubt that'll never happen;) Not without paying extra or having to special order it and wait.

Would be nice though.

I personally don't mind tip up or down..but some people don't like the swiss cheese effect

I think that the number of snobby collectors that whine about a few extra holes are miniscule in comparison to the number of people that just want a knife that they can comfortably carry the way they want to carry it.

I agree. Being left handed and a tip-up kind of guy I will no longer buy a knife that doesn't offer a clip position for me. I went through a time wherein I would buy a knife based on the steel, the lock, the handle, etc to infinity. But after selling off/giving away fully half my collection in one fell swoop of indignation I have begun buying knives based on the clip position alone. Titanium liners, G10 and S30V aren't good for anything if I can't get the damn knife out of my pocket in a timely manner.
