Why are Spyderco knives so sharp?

Not that I'm complaining or anything, but having purchased a Calypso Jr. recently, it is *by far* the sharpest knife I've ever handled, out of the box or otherwise. What exactly do they do at that factory to get these knives so sharp?

Lastly, I recently picked up a Sharpmaker and I'm loving it! A monkey could learn to use it. I've been able to get my knives hair popping sharp in mere minutes.

Hi Patrickb. Welcome to the Spyderco forum and thanx for the kind words.

Spyderco began in the knife industry by making sharpeners. First we made things sharp, before we began making sharp things.

We use superior materials, expert craftsmen and we constantly test and re-test in our R&D lab.

The consistent delivery of very high performance is our niche. Probably a good thing because our knives have often been called "fugly".

Thanks for the prompt response, Sal, it makes a lot of sense now. Fugly...never, how about 'unique'?

Best,

Patrick

Sal: as much as we call em ugly and say you designed in the dark, take it as a compliment from my end at least. The ergos on spydies at least work. Far too often I see knives that look good but are a pain to hold with large hands.

When you get to shapes like the calypso jr and dragonfly ss, it's easy to get used to, and grip change-overs are smooth. I have been using a calypso jr since we got notice they were getting chopped (in late summer 01), about a month after I got it I was doing grip change-over drills. Forward edge down, reverse edge forward, left to right. How many knives can you keep flowing for 5min and never break your grip?:D That includes left reverse to right forward in a single change-over

Fugly ... NOT, I know one thing, Spydercos are sure made to be USED, and they are COMFORTABLE to be used !! Out of all the knives I own Spyderco knives are the ones I reach for the most. p.s Grey Calypso jr. due today :) Thanks for bringing it back Sal !!!

When I first saw a Spyderco it was love at first sight. It was an SS Police (or perhaps Endura) BTW. So much for the F... ugly thing ;)

Wasn't there a song from the 60's or 70's that had lyrics that went something like " make a fugly Spyderco your knife, and be happy for the rest of your life" ;)

When it comes to knives, fugly can be a good thing or a bad thing.

Back on topic:
Sal, would you tell us what the usual finishing Grit/micron is? (or is it a trade secret?)

I am guessing that the final edge finish grit is preceded by a finer finsh, in order to achieve a toothy, yet keen edge.

Hi Knife knut. Can't say too much. Lotsa competition out there that would love to be able to duplicate our edges.

Skill is a lot of it.

I agree - while all spyderco's come very sharp - that calypso jr. is a friggin razor. It's probably the sharpest thing in my drawer as well.

Sometimes I like to think that I’m a pretty good sharpener, but cutting with a new Spyderco is a humbling experience; their edges are waaay, way sharper than I could ever get a knife. :( :)

when i first got my merlin, the tip was so sharp that i could tap a piece of paper and pick it up. WITHOUT TOUCHING THE TABLE BENEATH IT. now THAT is sharp!

This is very true about the calypso jr. I bought mine about 6 months ago, and that definately has to be the sharpest edge I have. It is all around a great knife, not Fugly.

I bought a spyder card when they were last produced and it was sharp enough to cut someone's head off. So I would have to say that in no way, shape, or form are spyder co. knives fugly.

I was helping prepare breakfast at a recent Boy Scout campout. One of the other dads was cutting up a bell pepper with his favorite "not so sharp" knife. Out of frustration, he asked me to finish up the last pepper, so out came the Moran and it just sort of melted through the last bell pepper in very short order. That little cutting demonstration generated comments from 2 or 3 of the guys about how sharp the blade was. They couldn't believe it.

Without a doubt, I find Spyderco knives to be the sharpest of the sharp, and (440V knives excepted), the easiest to keep sharp!

Unconventional? Maybe. Ugly? Eh, beauty is in the eye of the "beer-holder...":)

Pardon me if someone has already provided this response:

"Why are Spyderco knives so sharp?"

-Because dull knives are bad n'kay...
