Why are they always single sided?

I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would ever make a balisong or OTF which is not double sided; yet few OTF's and NO balisongs I have seen are double sided. Why is this? And it would seem so useful to have one side fully serrated with the other plain, or a clip point on one side and a tanto point on the other.......

Maybe 'cuz it's easier to get cut with a double edge then a single edge??
Of course it's possible to do great flipping with a double edged balisong but most probably you will get cuts.

Benchmade has made more then a few custom bali-songs in double edge, and they are very beautiful.

Aha! Au contriare my dear medusaoblongata... but Benchmade DID (and so did other companies in the other days) grind double sided blades.. spearpoints, stilletos, Krisses you came it. These knives were made not for the figner acrobats but th knfie fighters who wanted a balisong to fight efficiently and were content with a single flip opening.

Now the serrated side and plain side, I gues I can see that, there are some balisongs that are serrated on the clip and plain on the front side, but I don't understand how you can have BOTH a tantop point and a clip point (two points on the same knife?) on a knife.. do you mean tanto ground witha clip point? DO check out my gallery page it will open a world of wonder

cheers.

Ralph Turnbull made me up a beautiful double-edge butterfly that was latchless and the whole 9 yards! 5" blade, heat-treated and stress relieved 416SS handles with cocobolo inlays, what a knife!!! After I cut myself uncounted times with it I just had to trade it for health reasons! It's no fun to flip it just once!

Even I've got a double-edged bali, so they CAN'T be that rare.. you can do alot more stuff with it than just a single flip too. Just about everything I've ever done that involves touching the back of the blade I can do with my double-edger just slightly differently to avoid touching the back of the blade - finger twirls, pivots, the whole lineup of tosses - the works. Of course, it's not exactly user-friendly..

Quijebo, that would be the MT Nemesis III as well as the Dragonslayers and the Masterpieces. Some of the Combat Talon prototypes had half the top side edged as well as all of the CFO's.

well so it is faster for forign countrys to slam them out, send them over here and sell them at an enhighnened price.

that and they are a bugger to do a double edge withought being off on your grind lines.

sniperboy recently had some nice FHM balisongs for sale that included double edged spearpoints. The single edged bowies & clipoints were sold quickly. The double edged ones did not. It seems most still prefer single edged.
