Why are ultratechs so damn hard to sharpen !!?

Even my single edge tanto I can't seem to get anywhere near shaving sharp .
Using the sharpmaker of course.
Any helpful hints besides sharpies ?

The edge angle is probably different from the angle on your sharpmaker. Put sharpie on the bevel and see when it is worn off by the stone.
 
Several questions: what type of steel is it? What stone are you using? Has it been sharpened prior that may have changed the original angle?

By knowing some of the variables, we can offer better advise. :) If its S30V, we aren't going to need to break out the S90V tools. Or maybe we will.

I'd like to help, just need info first.
 
In my experience, the sharpmaker ain't worth a damn when it comes to reprofiling. I'd suggest getting some stones (diamond for tough steels) and learning how to form a burr, then your sharpmaker will work wonders for touch-ups.
