Why are you a Knife Knut?

My dad had a bunch of tool boxes, one was full knives mostly bucks, kershaws and SAKs. They were all cheap and beat up but he would always drop 20 or 30 bucks on a new knife when we were at Wal-mart or the Army/Navy store. When I got older I would go to Stoddard's and examine the SOGs and the Al Mars at least once a week. Minimum wage doesn't buy you a knife like that, but the long haired lady that worked at the knife shop showed me her brand new Decila and I was in love, with her and the knife. I saved up and got an Endura. Some knives had thumbstuds back then, But that hole with plastic handle and pocket clip made me feel invisible. It was the ultimate. I haven't been without a knife ever since.

Because I can't sing or dance...;) j/k...I guess cause I was always spending time in the woods growing up...my parents having a house in the catskills gave me the chance to do all the things some kids don't get to do...Hunt, fish, camp...from that i developed a love for knives...that slowly turned into a fixation...now soon be to 25 - i love them as much as i did when i got my first one at age 9...!:D

I have loved all guns and weapons since before I can even remember (I KNOW THAT A KNIFE IS MORE OF A TOOL) I had a huge collection of POS knives when I was younger, and when I figured out there were better knives out there than Cold Steel, It was all over.. IE: Spare Money, Interests in most other hobbies, etc.. And now thanks to Blade Forums I have said goodbye to free time, going to sleep with my wife, Etc...

Cause my wife doesn't like when I drink, gamble or chase other wonen, so for me it's less painful than the alternative.;) :D

All kidding aside I just love the practicality of collecting examples of one of mans oldest tools.

Also I like to buy and decorate production knives.

:D :D

My fixation with guns, knives, and weapons of all sorts began when I was really young - maybe 5 or so. My Grandfather had this small room off the garage that I would go sit in for hours. It was chock full of duck & deerhead mounts, racks and cabinets of long guns. And KNIVES. I mean out of control! At least a hundred......All attached to the walls everywhere. Hunters. Daggers. Bayonets. Samurai swords. You name it. My "Grampa" had them. That had to be the start of my addiction.;)

I think that it takes several things to be a knife knut. . .

1. A overwhelming desire to gather blades
2. Actually gathering blades
3. A willingness to share information/assistance about the desire
4. Promoting the addiction (properly and in a good manner)
5. Being a good knife citizen

I know that I've completed items 1 - 3.

I go out of my way to educate the non-knife kinda folks (that's #4)

Hopefully. . .I'm a #5.

Is this addiction cool or what ? :D

When I grew up my grandparents lived in our house. My Grandfather always had a pocket knife, usually one of those "Sharp" brand KMart lockblades that were ~$6. He used to buy me pocket knives secretly without my parent knowing and I had to keep them hidden but I'll bet my folks new anyway. Also, my neighbor grew up on a farm and did a lot of handyman stuff and he also carried a knife, usually a Case or Boker stockman. My Dad always carried one too, even in school when he was growing up (in India). He bought me my first knife when I was 5. I have been hooked ever since. However, whereas my Dad and Grandfather would only have one knife at a time, I had to have a bunch.

I grew up in the country and owned a pocket knife at a young age.
Of course my knives were ptetty cheep at first. Iwill never the day
i saved up enough to buy a Case stockman. My brother taught me to
whittle, from that time on I was hooked.

As a kid, I always had a pocket knife of some kind. As a teen, I had a nice fixed blade I used when I went trapping. Never felt like a 'knife knut' though! I must be a 'late bloomer' because now I find knives are my #1 hobby. I like them for their variety, appearance, heft, workmanship, & collectibility. It always amazes me that a hunk of metal can be worked into such a functional tool!

"Sometimes you feel like a knut.. sometimes you don't" :p :D :p

My psychologist says is something do to with my childhood :p :p

I never got the girl behind the counter I was a minor and she was like 30, but there's something about a woman with a blade the just stirs my soul, as long as she has a smile on her face.

My knife interest came from gun burnout. Once I had aquired more guns, spare clips, and ammo than I had room to store in the basement, I turned my attention to edged weapons. I'm sure in a few years I'll get tired of knives, and start hording bows and arrows, or maybe various types of land mines.
