Hey, I'm 15 and there is no age limit to here in the twin cities. I want to participate in some of the contests but can't. Can I still participate? My parents are fully aware of my knife addiction and have no problem with this. Niether does the state of Minnesota. How about it?

I'm certaintly no expert on this, but I would believe that it's some sort of liability to RAT to sell/giveaway knives to "Minors". I would think that if you got your parents to signup for you or have it shipped to your parents, you'd be all good!

You'd have to get the parents to log 25 posts though.

It's a liability thing and has already been hashed out in other threads.

it's a liability issues. I believe the last time this came up it was decided that your parent could sign up and THEY could win the contest, but not a minor.

Maybe he could participate and have any winnings mailed to an adult. Not my contest, though, so who am I to say? :)

You answered your own question.

It's a liability for RAT Cutlery. Just wait 3 years, it's not that far away.

really if your parents are okay with it have them join the forum, 25 posts doesnt take that long to achieve and before you know it you will set....

I understand that it's illegal to sell/give away knives to minors but why would that be a problem when it's not illegal for him to buy/have knives where he lives? (I'm 18 so it doesn't bother me that much, just wondering)

Well..one, It'd be a massive PITA to check each person's local laws. and two, I think it also has a lot more to do with the danger involved in some of the contests. There is a fair amount of bodily risk in a lot of them. In all cases, it's easier to set one strict ruling, than spend hour upon hour making a hundred ambiguous rulings on each contest, for each person.

And, it is their contest. If they say you have to be wearing a purple shirt, and high heels to win...well... then time to man up and get the stilettos.

That pretty much sums it up.

We have to look out for liability issues on both ends. Even if it's legal for a minor to possess a blade in your locale, if his/her parents don't want them to have it, they can sue us for giving it to them. If they were hurt doing something we "told" them to do out in the woods it could end in a lawsuit.

Better for RAT to draw a strict line in the sand than try to micromanage.

Cool. I already have a purple shirt. Or two.

With respect to liability, its not the age at which one can own or purchase a knife, but the age of legal majority...the age when an individual is legally responsible for themselves and can become independent from their parents/guardian. Usually 18 years old.

you're right (all of you), I didn't think about the contests involving doing anything that might end up with you hurting yourself :P. I just had the "giveaway" and photo contests and stuff like that in mind. and you're also right about the parents maybe not wanting their child to have a knife even though it's legal.
thanks for clearing that up for me :)
