Why can't I get a perfect one?

Hey guys, I am a kershaw fan-I love their knives, designs, and relatively inexpensive price. However, every single one I've purchased I've had to take back for replacement. My ZT for a broken tip (after just stabbing the soft side of juice cartons), a blur 6 times now, going on seven (this time the tip rounded off within a week of just cutting paper and opening boxes... absolutely no metal contact) (previous times for broken speedsafe, to the liner lock breaking) and now my rainbow leek (this time, the blade keeps on rubbing the handle when I close it, and the speedsafe is sluggish).
Do I just have bad luck?

Either you have had a run of bad luck, or juice cartons = cinderblocks and cutting paper and opening boxes = slicing tin.

I dunno...I've never had any problems or had to send one back. I did recently have to take one apart, as it was acting a little sluggish. A clean up, relube, and it's as good as new.

They've never touched any metal at all--I treat my knives very well. Hmm oh well, maybe I just have to wait until I get a perfect one.

I guess it happens; my cow-orker took a swipe at a case of beer (thin cardboard, into the side of the aluminum can) with his SOG Trident and the edge chipped in two places. Bizarre.

At least they look better'n those cheap Spyderco things... :p :D

Perhaps he buys them because they are on the leading edge of innovations such as composite blades, offer the Ken Onion designed SpeedSafe, world-class employees and warranty and are all around one of the best values for your dollar?

EXACTLY, besides, I like Kershaw's knife designs the best.

Well I guess I'll give it one last shot, otherwise, I'm just going to have to deal with it...

Out of the 34 Kershaws currently in my possession, I've had problems with 2, both Leeks, and pretty much the same problem with both...the torsion bar slips out of position because the liner on the side that contains the torsion bar is not perfectly flat up close by the pivot and lets the torsion bar worm its way in where it shouldn't be...this causes sluggishness because the torsion bar binds and also contributes to a misaligned blade in the handle.

I fixed one of these, a G10 Leek (1660G10), by removing the torsion bar/converting to manual...the other is a Random Leek (1660TGRYST), and that one I'm probably going to send in to Kershaw.

I'd say you're having an unreal run of bad luck...sorry to hear it. :(

I know from personal experience how it feels: in the past I had "runs" of problem knives with two very popular makes of knives. I kind of chalked it up to just luck of the draw, and that could be the case here ... though I was p***ed when the factories sent me replacements that had problems.

My solution has been to only buy from internet retailers like Grand Prairie Knifes and Newgraham that will actually inspect the knife they're sending you.

my advice is, at least when the speedsafe is sluggish and what not, to get a torx tool and do the job at home. Kershaw will send you the replacement torsion bars free of charge, you just have to ask them. its so freakin easy to do anyway, and its fun to see inside your knife :D :D

as for the tips and the broken liners, well, that just plain sucks

The only problem I have had so far with any Kershaw is my Cyclone does not open near as fast as my sons Blur which is not realy a problem but I wish it did open as fast. It is still a great knife though.

(besides spyderco's make me barf.... n/o )

I have alot of Kershaws I have had no problems at all with them they are very well made knives.

I dont know why you are having problems with them maybe it is just a run of bad luck or maybe you are trying to do something with your knives they are not designed to do?

I have a ton of Spyderco knives as well, again no problems either they are very well made knives also.

This thread starts out with a question about a problem (s) with one makers knives & then includes some opinoins that have nothing to do with the problem, I dont get it though, if you have a question about a problem with Kershaws then what in the world would your Spyderco opinoins have to do with that.

Good luck on your quest to find out whats going on with your Kershaw knives & to find "The perfect one" I doubt slamming another companies product along the way will help you get the answers you want.

As I stated earlier I own many of the knives from both these companies & I have never had a problem with either of these makers knives myself & would highly recommend them both to anyone I know

George, while I can't answer for riffraff and knvesandguns, I'd wager a guess that it has something to do with someone named spyderco endura asking Why do you still buy them. and following that statement up with They don't sound too good. Obviously, spyderco endura has never owned a Kershaw knife, or he would be speaking from a different viewpoint by addressing his personal experiences. Instead he voices his opinions, and they are replied to.

Just a guess.......

FTR, I also own a few spydies, Bucks, Case, a few old Schrades, a BM or two and a sebbie. All are nice for what they are.

Just to add to what SP said, most of us here don't go bashing other brands
and we would appreciate folks not coming in here bashing ours. Show us some respect and you'll get ours.

Have a great day. :)

'Come on guys...Please behave yourselves while here at the Kershaw Forum...After-all this isn't "Whine & Cheeze".

Aw, I was just funnin' him...with that name, it was fairly obvious where his loyalties lie... (see the smilies?)

Although... I really do find the Spydercos to be...odd...looking. :(

Ah, well. To each their own.

Are you buying them from the same place or dealer? If so, you may want to look into it. If not, you may want to run when you hear thunder b/c you're one unlucky :(. I suppose the silver lining is that you're getting the most out of Kershaw's renowned customer service. :)

Believe it or not, I did not buy any of them online. My very first blur I got from a private dealer at a gunshow for $35, now I'm at my 7th one (which is about to be sent in for sharpening)
My rainbow leek and ZT I purchased at the yearly XXX'ed out sale at the Kershaw warehouse, both have been already returned--the XXX'ed out leek that I bought would not lock up at all (I could close it without using the frame lock) and my ZT's tip busted (as I posted up above). My new ZT has a misaligned tip--but I'm going to deal with that...

Ok, first off, I don't like responding to these types of threads...at all, but I will drop in and give my opinion on this one.

knivesandguns I really appreciate you sticking with us, I really do. To spend your hard earned money on our brand is an act we truly value. Thanks very much.

With that said, I am very confused with your words.
It is literally impossible to break a tip on the soft side of a carton of juice. It's just really hard to fathom 154CM or S30V getting taken down by carton of juice.

Same could be said with the Blur tip vs. paper and opening a cardboard box. It's just difficult to understand.

Maybe I misunderstood your post about Blur #7, are you saying you have had 6 warranty issues with 6 different Blur's?

The other issue that I have, and have had in past threads is that I don't think it's balanced to hear about warranty/issues/performance/ concerning factory 2nds. Seriously, folks want to bag on factory 2nd's? They don't have warranties, you handled and inspected the knife, you buy them at such crazy prices...they are not perfect knives, and you come to the sale knowing that. Not sure there is a complaint there that I want to hear, but as I said, I don't like these types of threads.

You also left the fact that these were 2nds out till you last post.

I really want you to hang around BF's knivesandguns, and I don't mean to put you on the hot seat here. The truth is that I want you to get that perfect Kershaw, and not everyone of them is perfect (especially if they have XXXX on them). Hopefully you will stick around, it's important to us.
