Why can't I navigate the forums?

Spark,

In the last week or so I can not get my browser to open the site.
I have AOl and it uses IE to navigate.
If I go to IE and try from there I have no problems.I was on the phone and instant message with an AOL tech for about 2 hours and he could not figure it out either.
Do you know if anyone else that uses AO"hell" is having this problem, and how do I solve it?
If I get it to open a forum (knives for sale for example),I click on a thread and it won't open the thread. This happens in all of the forums.
Please Help

From: Ivan8883@aol.com 5-6-991051PMEDT I am having ,Iguess , a problem like yours for several days now. It is real slow to get into a forum. They gave me another URL but it has not helped. Blade forum says it is a Aol(Hell) problem. I like blade foprum but may have to go much more into other sites. Ivan

Well, hopefully this will stop a few emails.

As you guys know, we moved servers to our own, dedicated one.

Since that time, there have been some problems primarily coming from AOL users. Specifically, AOL users report the forums timing out at 39% of transfer being finished.

What exactly is causing this, I don't know, however I have a few ideas. I think that AOL is trying to cache the forums in a proxy server, and is not updating them properly. If that is not the case, I believe that AOL is not updating it's DNS records since other AOL users are reporting that they cannot get onto the site at all.

All I can say is please be patient, this problem should resolve itself in a few days (or a week). I'm investigating what's going on.

Here's what I could use from you guys:

When you are connected via AOL, open a MS DOS Prompt (on your Start menu), and type in the words tracert bladeforums.com

See how many hops there are, and to what major connections there are. If you can forward me the results, even better.

Thanks for your patience.

I have aol and I am having the same problem. It is aol.If you use your computers IE or if you have Netscape, they will open the site with no problem. Aol can knock me down but not keep me out.Oh by the way Netscape kick a** over IE.

So you are starting IE externally, then switching back to AOL, and BladeForums.com works?

Sounds like what I thought then, the problem is AOL.

Thanks for the information, I'll be sure to pass this along to other AOL'ers who ask.

One of two ways:<ol>[*]Uninstall and Reinstall AOL. This should take care of it every time from what I've been told.
[*]Start AOL, minimize it, then start IE or NN externally and go to BladeForums.com from outside AOL. Temporary solution.
[*](Possible fix) Remove BladeForums.com from you AOL favorites list and re add it. Don't know how effective this is.

Experiment and let me know which one works the best for you guys.

Spark,

I've had the same problem too. I've already tried all of your suggestions. The only one that seems to work every time (at least for me) is using IE externally. Thanks for your suggestions.

Anybody,

I've used AOL for about 18 months now and I am not at all satisfied. Can anyone recommend a better ISP in the Phoenix area (area code 602)?

From: Ivan8883@aol.com 5-8-99 1141PM EDT I am now finding that I can get into the forums if I wait until after 9 or later at night,no problem. In the afternoon or into the early evening, it is nearly impossible and way to slow a procedure. I am sure the problem is Aol somhow ,but I am new to this computer thing. I tried using the IE but it did not work for me. I sure hope somthing willwork out so that I may use the Blade Forums earlier in the day. Thanks Ivan

I am having trouble too.. This is the first time I have been able to get on in a while! It seems to be working fine right this minute..Talked to AOL today they are sending me a revisted version...I like aol cause it has multiple email addresses for the family! and its cheap!!!Well I hope it stays this way. Thanks Spark for your help..Sorry for posting in the other spot..Forgot about this page

Iceman:

Go to: http://thelist.internet.com/areacode/602.html
for a listing of ISPs in the 602 area. You'll have to determine which offer a local phone # for your town - the most important thing.
Some of the nationals are there, most are $20/mo for unlimited or close to that. I've had the best luck with small local places if you can find a good one.
Netcom is OK, I've not heard anything bad about Earthlink or Mindspring.
AT&T is ... well, I better not mention AT&T around Spark, I remember how PO'd he was when he gave up on them.

But no matter who ya go with, they gotta be better than aol.

Bill

Back when I left AT&T, they sucked. Pure and simple. No if and's or buts. Now they're buying MediaOne, so god knows what's going to happen to my local service.

Bill_H,

Thanks for the info. Almost anything may be better than A.O.L.

Problems with aol may be a regional thing. I've been on aol over 2 years with very few problems, but I'm in MD/DC, and aol is practically just down the street.
I've also had no problems with accessing this site using aol4 (with its IE4 browser), and no problems so far after moving to IE5. But it is a little difficult to type with my fingers crossed

Netscape (4.04) OTOH, works fine for these forums, but only displays about half of the first-page links. Go figure.

From :Ivan 5-12-99-550 PM EDT Guys, by using my Internet Explorer, I can get into Bladeforums with no problem. It bets looking for another server. Ivan

Have any of you BF members with AOL noticed that you can now get to BF without going through IE? My computer now seems to be working normally. I can now get to BF through favorites. Did AOL fix the problem or did Spark fix it?
