Why car kits are useful

Tonight I got into my car to drive home, and found that my cars internal heater fan died. It's pretty much freezing outside, so my car is frosting up and I can't see anything without the heater defrosting it. Didn't want to have to tow my car anywhere, so I just dug into my car kit and pulled out a jacket, hat, gloves and blanket and bundled up for a cold ride home with the windows down.

Sometimes a survival kit can come in handy for stupid problems, like a fan not working :)

I have a five gallon plastic tote in the trunk with an extra blanket, hat, a worn fleece jacket, rain jacket (that has always been too big for me), gloves - all these being used clothes that I had worn for years. Instead of throwing them out (donating, actually) they do good as some back up layers. These come in handy very often.

I always put 2 of my old large winter coats in the car. One a Columbia Down and the other a Carhartt Gortex. I used to wear really big clothes back in the day so these fit over other jackets. I keep a shovel, a couple of Blizzard Survival Sleeping Bags, thin wool blanket, esbit stove and fuel, SS Nalgene and GSI cup. Tire sealant and stuff like this.

For my in-car-kit sleeping bags - which are those have been taken out of the active backpacking line-up - i just toss 'em in the back, uncompressed. They're old and beat up anyway so i'm not worrying about them one bit. I admit that my car is not a "working trades" type truck so i don't worry about dirt/grease/etc. I drive an SUV and Mrs.Me drives a Honda mini-van w/a large cargo area behind the 3rd row of seats which holds "her" car-kit.

In the winter I just throw a couple old blankets, gloves and hats in my truck and the wifes car...Your story reminded me of my wifes first car,, (before we met)..Her heater didn't work for a whole winter so she just bundled up and went on her marry way,,ALL winter long in PA..

Man have I gotten her spoiled..She hasn't had to drive anything like that since we've been together, lol

I keep two sleeping bags in my truck in the Winter. I also keep a wool face mask in the truck. If I had to walk very far in a blizzard, I'd need the mask badly. Where I live we're expected to help ourselves as alternate help may not be available. I also keep a 20 quart tupperware-type container filled with everything I think I might need in addition to tire chains, 3 tow straps and 2 different types of shovels. The gas tank is never below 1/2 full and I've got On Star.

I have an old snow suit and waterproofs in my trunk
Shovel, leatherman, and my FAK
And other lighting safety gear and fire lighting gear

Living in Minnesota, I always have a car kit packed with blankets and warm clothes. Recently my wife was crowing about how much room it takes up (large duffle) and wanted it out of the car.
I'm going to make her read the OP.
