Why Cold Steel is Brittle

I found the ductile to brittle fracture analysis to be extremely enlightening, and the pictures help. Timely stuff as I snapped about ten coupons last night trying to dial in 1095 HT. Helps me know what I'm looking at. Merry Christmas!
 
I really like steels with nickel in them, and vanadium. No 15n20 in the article. Just no data, or has it not tested well?
 
Where is the rebuttal from fat man hacking at a side of beef with a cheap katana? :p
 
Well have room temperature charpy results from both L6 and 15n20, tempered well below the TME range. Maybe Larrin can send his charpy tester up here and I’ll wait for a -35c day to test samples. :confused:

Everything I have found in steels with more than 0.4% carbon is in citation 12. Maybe we can do a low temperature toughness study of some kind after we have filled out our room temperature toughness more.

The most requested steel for hunters and skinners up here is 15n20. Z-wear is #2. I must have made well over 100 skinners in 15n20. W2 with a hamon is popular for gifts. That’s mostly an esthetic thing though.

What hardness are you running your 15n20 hunters?

How much does lower aus temps affect toughness because it lowers the amount of carbon in solution?
