Some designs are obvious, while others are less so.
to wit: The Hell Razor butt vs. the SFNO butt. The SFNO butt basically incorporates a skull crusher, while the HR incorporates a........um........triple rounded butt. The center hump is higher than one would think necessary AND it's off center......
Aesthetically, I found the SFNO butt more pleasing. In fact, I recall at least one poster that changed his HR butt to mimic that of the SFNO, so I was not alone.
Still, I'd not held an SFNO until recently, so it was tough to do much more than speculate.
I found the SFNO butt sharp and uncomfortable when choked up (down?) on the handle. I could easily see it poking my side in a medium to high ride sheath, unlike the HR.
I re-examined the HR and I think I discovered something.....perhaps the original purpose for the butt design. The center bump that seemed unnecessarily high aligned with the bump at the spine.......just like it should be if one wanted to hammer with the butt!! Being rounded, it wouldn't chew up whatever was being pounded. Whereas the SFNO was intended to seriously put the hurt on whatever it impacted.
So, it seems that Jerry designed it that way from the beginning.
What OTHER subtle design features do the various knives have? Anything escape your first once-over that made itself apparent later?
