Why do benchmades hold up like they do?

It seems that my 940 osborne just keeps on lasting and lasting no matter how much hard use I put it through. Still no blade play up and down or left to right. Why does it do that? I feel like any other knife would have so much blade play by now that I'd throw it away. How is it so strong? What mechanically makes it do that? Is it the axis lock?

It's probably just build quality. My Griptilian has play in all directions. It's not so much that it really bothers me, but it's there.

EDIT: Called Benchmade about it and looks like they'll be happy to warranty it. I'm very pleased with their customer service. I'll be sending it in after I move.

Benchmade just has a high build quality, there are many other knives and companies that achieve the same thing. Usually it is at least in the $100 price range, but there are knives that are less than that which are extremely durable and have no blade play after extreme use. It also goes the other way, there are knives that are over $100 which do not hold up to the test and can be worn down.

The way the axis lock works, your knife should never have any forward play at all unless one of the springs are broken. And side to side play is just a matter of the pivot screw getting loose in my experience. At least on my 746, the pivot loosens itself with use, but this is because I need to re-loctite it after fixing it.

Build quality, materials selection, and talented people make a big difference. And then back the product up with bombproof warranty.
