Why do pivot bolts unscrew?

Say you have a pivot that’s keyed so it can’t rotate with respect to the handle. Why does the pivot screw back out on some knives with keyed pivots? The blade can’t transmit any rotation to the screw. Does it have something to do with flexing of the handle somehow? I know a little bit about bearing procession - is that involved?

Oh yeah, I’ve used tape and blue Loctite. That works great. But I just want to know why the bolt unscrews. I don’t understand the physics.

Without any threadlocker, the pivor screw is never really "tight" in the traditional sense.
It has to be a little loose to allow the blade to rotate which makes the fastener susceptible to vibrations or just rubbing against clothing when clipped and working itself loose over time.

If you look at a bushed pivot (a la Sebenza), You can tighten the pivot screw all the way and create a little bit of stretch on the screw so it will not need threadlocker.

Also just 'cause it's keyed doesn't mean there isn't some small degree of wiggle in the keyed hole. That slight wiggle, over time, can lead to some degree of the screw backing out.

Pivot screws working loose has been a problem with several of my knives. The one that's been the worst has a very short screw and I've wondered if that's the cause. I don't think it makes any difference if the knife has a captive pivot. I wonder if pivot screws had reversed threads if they would still come loose? I've just switched to Vibra TITE and it seems to work better than locktite and is easier to use than Teflon tape.
