Why do so few folders have distal taper?

There's sometimes....SOME.... but I don't think I've seen any tapered from the ricasso forward.

Seems it would add some cutting utility.

Whatchutalkinabout?

Let's see this, Buck 172 does, sebenzas do, I have a sypderco that does.

yeah
i'd say there are quite a bit of those out there that have distal taper.

In reference to the original post, how would distal taper provide any significant differences in cutting utility?

I think certain materials, thick cardboard for example, a blade with a distal taper will bind less then a knife that carries it's full thickness almost all the way to the tip.

It might, was your tear made in the good ole USA or on some ferrin place? USA made tears are the BEST!

Spyderco Manix, Mini-Manix, Military, Paramilitary, Lil' Temp, Calypso, Calypso Jr., Caly 3, UKPK, DKPK, Dragonfly, Lava, Centofante, Centofante II...

Shall I continue? :D

Sal seems to like the properties imparted by distal taper. So do I!

Distal taper is the ultimate blade shaper. Spyderman used one, and so did the masked caper. Handy for cutting tough toilet paper!

I had no idea Spyderco made so many with distal taper. I've only owned Delica and Endura.
I gotta get out more.
:)

Don't forget the R2

The distal taper adds a lot of versatility in slicing ability, particularly to reduce 'wedging' when slicing some materials.

For example, I often slice cigars in half when I want a shorter smoke. Using the thinner distally-tapered forward blade section allows cutting cigars without cracking or tearing the cigar wrapper. Similarly, the narrower point slips precisely under a cigar band to cut the band without damaging the wrapper.

The distal taper of the Military is nice for such tasks, but some slip-joint patterns (Muskrat, etc.) are much more finely tapered and pointed for such tasks.

I don't have that one :D
As I hinted, I could continue. Spyderco makes (and has made) a lot of full flat ground models which feature distal taper. The old Benchmade/Boguszewski Spike and Mini-Spike are also flat ground with distal taper.

Two of my older favorites from BM the AFCK 800 & 812 first issue had very nice distal tapers.

FK
