Why do so many survival shows feature rice?

Like Survivor and The Colony, they all eat rice. I'm sure rice isn't part of their regular diet...why don't they bake bread or eat some other grain like corn or potatoes? I'm sure the experts have chosen rice for a particular reason. Just wondering why have they.

Lightweight, easy to pack and prepare.

Bread requires more ingredients and skill to prep. Potatoes are heavier and more perishable.

I always bring bread and potatoes with me when I go camping, mind you. Both go well with fresh-caught trout.

All the best,

- Mike

It keeps well and can be stored for emergency use !

Also it can be added to beans, which when dried also keep well, combined together they give a reasonable source of protein and fibre !

While I don't eat rice all the time, I do eat it. It will last a very long time, and if you are at least semi-used to eating it, it really isn't that bad with a little seasoning to sweeten it a little.

between rice and beans you get a complete protein, just not as compactly as you do when eating meat. Low bulk and easy storage are major bonuses as well.

As pit stated, consumed with legumes (beans), they contain the amino acids that the human body can use to make proteins. Also, the number one source of starch grown in the world.

Sam's Club sells yellow rice (10oz I think) in a very durable mylar pouch... the spicy yellow rice or ramen noodles with a can of tuna or chicken is the mainstay of my hurricane pantry...I'm originally from Ohio, and until I was stationed in Japan, thought that rice always was served with milk and sugar...regards

I remember watching "Alone in the Wild" and the guy had a bag of rice, and a bag of oats, which lasted him for over a month I believe. What else can you pack in small bag that will keep you fed for a month?

All the other posters in this thread have hit the major points (light, easy to prepare, lasts forever), and rice also has more fat in it per serving than potatoes and bread, which can be very useful.

Yep an Amen to all of the above. I would want as much as I could carry if lost or stranded. Mixes with about anything. And I've been eating it from a tot til now. (I'm Not a tot now, just to clear that up) Thinkin about it, rice would go well with tater-*tots*They don't use it on those shows for nothing. Good stuff. Enjoy. edgy

And Don't forget to finish your rice today.! OK:D

My family grew up eating white rice all the time but I eat more grains nowadays. Like has been said, I agree that it does store well and just need water to prepare. I did not know about rice having more fat in it. Good to know.

I should specify - brown rice, not white. Brown has ~2 grams of fat per 1 cup serving, compared to less than half a gram for potatoes.

Mmmm... red beans and rice...
:D

Only if it is brown rice.

I thought brown rice and white rice had pretty much the same calories and amounts of protein and carbs, the nutritional difference being in fat, vitamins and minerals? I could be wrong, though. I know brown rice can go rancid because of the oils in the husk. I like all kinds of rice, and eat a lot of it.
