Why do we like knives?

Lines from a recent episode of Bones:

Booth: You sure do have a lot of blades here
Creepy Janitor guy: A man never knows when he will need to cut.
Booth ...that's quite a motto...

(btw the creepy blade loving janitor turned out NOT to be the killer, he was if anything a bit of a spoof of the unreasonable fear described in the linked article)

Nobody does creepy quite like Robert Englund. That was a cool episode.

Because I can't afford Ferrari's. Seriously though, I started out buying guns and was obsessed with guns. Now I have sold all but three and spent the money on knives. Hell I even traded one to Jerry Busse for an FFBM. A gun for a knife? Yup. It's that bad. Once you move into knives, then you got to get into sharpening. Then you have to get into leather and kydex and handle wraps. Oh my!

Why do we like knives? Many reasons, I suppose, but I ran across this article and I thought it did a good job of explaining one answer to that question.

I got a chuckle out of the guy giving the years old, cherished knife from his youth to his wife, who promptly lost it. Same happened to me with former girlfriend, although not the reason we parted.

I like knives because guns are too loud.

Same here. I used to spend all my time over at Glocktalk, but I couldn't tell you the last time I've read anything about a gun. Now I didn't go and sell any or anything like that, I've just have kind of lost interest.

My obsession started with whittling as a kid. I lost track of my passion for knives for many years, until I blistered my hand using a cheap knife to whittle (of all things) a bow and arrow for a project for my son's grade school class.

I started to recall how handy it was to have a knife as part of my everyday wardrobe (or EDC as my fellow junkies call it). Then I started wanting cooler knives, and more of them.

Then I started lurking on Bladeforums and other such websites, and then came actual postings. And here I am, enjoying the heck out of it.

My Grandpa turned me on to knives when I was a kid.I think either you take to them,or you don't.Kind of hard to put your finger on.

Because they're handy tools that usually gets cutting done cleaner and better than scissors... I blame MacGyver for my knife obsession :D

knives are tools that are hardcoded in a man's genes.
we exist because of early knives-flints.
we survived the ice age bcoz of knives.
crazy retort but makes sense?
:D

my grandpa turned me on to knives as well. He gave me my first smkw magazine where i bought a poorman's bowie. I don't think they sell it anymore.

I like knives because sometimes I need to cut something and I've yet to find a sharp hammer that will do the job.

I’ll play, although I’m probably just beating a dead horse. I would have to say that it is because they are just so useful. I obviously have a fascination with them but their usefulness has a lot to do with it.

1. because I cant afford to buy a GIBSON and Fender guitar anymore.
2. I cant buy a gun
3. I luv camping
4. My father luv knife
