Why do we spend SO much money for knives?

I got into an argument with my brother recently. He has a tanto serrated Kershaw Blur. Holds an edge decently IMO. Thanks to me, I recommended this knife to him, and saved him from spending 12 dollars on a Tac-Force P.O.S. Anyways, I ordered a ZT 0801 and paid $160 for it. Great deal, considering retail is like 240. I told him about it, and showed him pictures of it and explained how this is my first high end knife. He didn't get as hyped as I was. Elmax, titanium scales, framelock. What more could you want? He said something like, "Why would you spend over 100 dollars on a knife? All it does is cut, and that's what a knife is meant to do! All my fire/police friends buy cheap knives, because there's no reason to spend so much money on a knife." I was lost for words. Knives are a hobby, let alone tools. Cutting edge, edge retention, materials... All play a huge role in the price of the knife. What would you have said? He has a good point, but there's something much more...

This is what I'd say "Why does anyone need a pair of $100 dollar shoes when you can go to Walmart and buy a pair for 15 bucks?"

If it was a female, you can also use the comparison with the multiple $100 dollar purses a woman can buy, each to match a different dress/style.

Why would you pay for a premium beer if in the end you get drunk anyway? They all get you drunk .
I have a Blur. It loses sharpness when I stare at it tool long.
I have an 0801 and carry most of the time. I work for my money and 0801 is one of the fruits of my labor.
I can't wait for the 0802.
Knives to me are functional art and products of craftsmanship.

Does he go to IKEA for all of his furniture too?

I just found out I have intestinal cancer. I'm probably gonna kill myself sometime next week. I don't care, you get what you pay for usually. I like my $22 utilitac II.

Ask him why people buy Ferraris when a honda can get you from point A to B just fine?

I bet one of your firefighter or police friends have a nice ride that they really don't need. But they buy it and pay insurance for it because they LIKE it.

And if none of them drive nice cars OR carry nice knives then they're probably broke a$$holes :D

You've got more friends here anyway that have it together enough to afford nice things that they like.

Ask him if any of them wear a nice watch! I'll bet one of them does! Why in the hell does one need to spend $200 $300 or more for a watch that is a simple timepiece...it isn't even a tool you use! you look at it, and in all actuality you can just look at the sky.

The watch won't cut your seatbelt in an accident or some drywall on a job or some kindling while camping. But you like it so you buy it.

I'm not a watch guy but I've got a nice Nixon because I liked it.

And once your 0801 comes in I'm sure some of his buddies will think it is the bees knees, if not screw them. They don't know nothin. Find a task that you know their cheap knives could absolutely not handle and show them why we get the knives we do.

Make us proud :)

Edit: I misread that you were talking about your friends. All the same, just wait till their cheapies are dull and won't EVEN cut a steak after a few hard cutting tasks while yours will still shave any of their arm hairs if they try.

Pride of ownership . I for one can't afford to own a Rolls or a Lambo or some other very high end car . But I CAN afford to own a knife or two by makers that are considered top tier .

HOLD MY BEER AND WATCH THIS !

Why do people spend upwards of $5K or $10K on a watch? Your cell phone has a clock, your stove has a clock, your cable box, and computer have clocks.

Does he buy the cheap single ply toilet paper too?

Remember you have to use both sides!

Fine metalworking, precision and close tolerances, and good blade-steels. Craftsmanship; artistry in steel.
It doesn't come cheap.

Gotta spend your cash on something, might as well be something you enjoy using. It blows my mind what some people spend on clothes, vehicles, alcohol. Heck, people spend millions on enormous houses when they could survive living in something tiny. It all comes down to personal enjoyment, and if it makes you happy and doesn't hurt anyone, then, more power to you!

Actually I have read that that many people are not buying watches any more. They will become more like traditional slip joints where people that like them buy a lot and the majority buy something modern and inexpensive or use their cell phones.

My brother feels exactly the same way about knives. He can not see why you would pay so much money for a knife. He can afford it, but does not see the value. There is no convincing him. So, other than buying one or two knives to cut with, it's a hobby. Hobbyists spend a lot of money on their hobbies.

Because you can. It's something to enjoy, knowing the quality and mechanics of a well built knife. Do you eat no name brand foods or drink no name sodas? It will make a turd in the end, but being able to savor the taste of brand name foods is the difference. That's what I tell people. Or, It's my patriotic duty to help stimulate the economy by my participation in helping folks stay in business.
