Why Do You Buy New Knives?

Today I realized that half the time I buy a knife to use as a beater (usually 1095 1055 or some kind of carbon steel blade) knife so that my razor sharp "good knife" (usually s30v or bg42) can stay sharp and clean. Then Ill modify the beater and get it razor sharp and start to use it as my new "good knife". Then after a few weeks the process repeats itself buy ill buy a stainless bladed knife again.
Does anyone else do this?

My buying of knives has slowed down gradually. I really have all the knives I need, and since I recently got a DDR knife for which I've been waiting, I even have a knife that is pretty close to what I think of as the perfect EDC.

The only thing that can get me to buy a new knife is a significant technical advance, in a package that I find usable. I will probably buy the Kershaw composite blade folder w/ zdp cutting edge when it comes out. And I will buy one of the new 'DiamondBlade' friction-forged knives, once they come out with a model that I can use. Oh, and I still need an ultra-light version of my DDR folder that can replace my old Wm Henry liner lock for carry while jogging. So I guess I've still got some buying left in me.

Generally if I see a knife I like I will buy it, sometimes it ends up in the edc rotation other times it is carried a few times then put away. I have quite a few males in my family who all like knives as presents so I am never at a loss as to what to do with them...lol.

(the girls in the family get some too but they are not as interested)

I have all the knives I'll ever need, but I don't have all the knives I want:) so I continue to buy more. I am getting better though, trying hard not to end up with too many blades of similar design and purpose.

Why do I buy new knives?

Because...plain and simple...I am a knife junkie! There appears to be no treatment available, and I will be needing to satisfy this fix fairly regularly. I am ok for a while...until I go to a good knife store, or see a shiny new catalog...then my eyes glaze over...and I need knives the way a zombie needs brains.

Oh well...there are far worse things to be addicted to!

Happy Easter all!!!

I keep wanting to try new concepts , some I stick with , others get rejected . SAKs and Bokers CLB series is the crack of the knife world , cheap and gives a good buzz . Custom collaborations get better all the time , this gives a chance to try stuff you wouldnt ordinarily get to try . Their are lots of inprovements comming out all the time .

Some knives I`m too sorry to use,so I buy new one,and either it proves more valuable than old one,so I don't use it,or it sucks,so I back to old one ,and keep looking for another. And all over.See,if I buy handmade knife ,that`s one of a kind,so cant take it to the woods. And I tend to multiple items, not just knives.Axes, machetes, canteens, backpacks, all gear, just name it.Now I see it sounds awful, maybe should find some professional help?

My good knife is my user. But of course I have to come up with reasons for each one so this one is the Friday night drinking knife, and that one is the Wednesday morning hangover knife, this one is the bushcraft knife if I ever give up on society... etc. You get the picture. :)

That new knife has to be perfect. I want to be the one who gives it character.

I buy new knives to replace the ones that I use and lose at work or while out hunting. Also, because I cannot afford a new gun as much as a new knife. I'm always on the quest for "the perfect hunting knife" (no such thing) so I try them out and either keep them, trade them away or give to friends as gifts.

Sometimes I get smitten with a different style or look of a knife. If it doesn't go away after awhile, I may buy it. Lately I have tried to trade for knives; it's more fun and less spendy.

its whats refered to as mental illness. many try to resolve issues with unnessasary crap; not unlike we do here.

I buy new knives that have appealed to my sense of style and material elegance (ie. they look good). I try to give each knife a place in the EDC rotation and if I really like it, I will often buy a second for 'back up'. I have far more knives than I really need, but nowhere near the amount that I really want. ;)

I am looking for a knife

1. comfortable
2. easy to carry
3. holds an edge
4. ease of sharpening
5. carves wood
6. concealable
7. looks good to me

When I find a knife that fits all those I will stop buying knives.

The F-1 comes close. Maybe the S-1 will be better.

The question might be better answered by asking, "why do you not buy." Now that I have all the knives I need, a knife has to be damn near perfect in my eyes on a number of counts.

For example, I briefly thought about buying an S90V Spyderco Military just because the use of S90V is so rare, and doubtless has great edge-holding.

However, Spyderco could have offered it w/ Wave & DLC coat and I would have not been able to pass. The lack of those things gives me enough excuse not to buy.

I thought about buying one of the zdp William Henry 'Gen-Tacs' for carrying while jogging. But since they no longer offer the liner locks that I prefer, only their newer button locks, I passed. If I could buy a liner-lock Gen tac, I would in a heart-beat, but I will stick (pun intended) with my old WM Henry carbon fiber model, with liner lock, pocket clip, and DLC coated 154CM blade till something damn near perfect comes along to replace it.

Also, as I get older, I start to see the advantage of carrying the same stuff, in the same pocket, in the same circumstances. That way I don't have to frisk myself to figure out "now which pocket did I decide to put that newfangled knife in today? Did I use the clip or not. Is it a liner lock, button lock, or shlock-lock?""
